A $65.28 gift to Capitol Hill

This site is mostly harmless fun and doesn’t cost a dime. Except when I do something stupid like The Capitol Hill Monitor Disposal Drive. I took a load of abandoned computer hardware out of a traffic circle, into my garage then (after putting it off for a month or two) down to the geeks at Re-PC. Turns out, it costs around $15 a pop to dispose of computer monitors. Sad little Capitol Hill traffic circle, don’t expect anything fancy for the holidays. You already got your gift.

can’t they be given away on craigslist and/or to some organization that provides computers to low income people? seems weird that the only option would be to recycle them, but maybe there’s a huge surplus of monitors going to charity already or something…

They’re bulky and full of toxic badness. Nobody wants them save companies that make a business of (hopefully!) properly destroying. Plus, these particular screens were nasty and probably been peed on, etc.

Trust me, charities already get far too many “donations” of worthless garbage that costs money to dispose of. Busted monitors, recalled baby strollers, ripped clothing, giant bags o’ crap — they get it all.
