A friend reports that today’s visit to Rainbow brings tragic news. The indie grocer is calling it quits May 1. Haven’t seen this with our own eyes yet but sounds like the deathwatch is over.

it’s always sad to see an independent business go down. you should see if you can talk to the owners of Rainbow and get some insight into the nature of the real problem. and I wonder who the property-owner is of that lot? do some investigative reporting! :)
now – the big, big question – WHAT GOES IN THERE!?!?
that lot is in the HEART of our lovely, little 15th ave corridor. whatever goes in there could have a big impact on 15th ave. life!
Where will all the grumpy employees go?
That space would be perfect for an all-in-one hardware store.
The basement in QFC Broadway just doesn’t cut it.
Silly anonymous – the grumpy employees will go to Madison Market. ;)
Pffft@4: Madison Market supplied some of the grumpy employees for Rainbow, not the other way around.
Perhaps the apparent decision a few years ago to start catering to an upscale clientele was a poor one. Used to be able to buy organic produce at Rainbow at prices not much different than those for commercial produce at QFC. Rainbow also had some great deals on cheese, compared with QFC and Safeway. Many ex-customers can’t afford peppers at $4-7 per lb. I don’t understand why the produce prices became so high.
