Art, fart — The real graffiti question is what is OK to tag?

Our post about Saturday’s Capitol Hill clean-up sparked a little cyber discussion about, as neighbor allan called them, the “lovely cap hill stickers, flyers, posters, tags, etc” that might get swept away in such an event. Roboti countered with a good riddance: “Many of us are tired of these lame excuses for vandalism and defacement of public property.”

We stood there and egged them both on.

Lo and behold, one of the Slog guest posters is also asking questions about graffiti. “Is it ok to deface the property of others for the sake of art? Who determines what is acceptable?”

The answer, of course, is online poll voters. But we don’t really care to get into the art/not art debate. We want to give the children (and the children at heart) of Capitol Hill something actionable to work with. Please take a moment and mark which variants of sticker, paint and tape aided modification you don’t consider a criminal act. Of course you can pick more than one. Modern technology!

Please note, aspiring neighborhood vandals and vandal vigilantes, these results will be binding and enforced once this poll closes next week.

It is unbelieveable to me how anyone can condone graffiti on private property! Not only is it illegal, but it shows a total lack of respect for your fellow human beings.

As far as public property is concerned, very few citizens know or care about the very reasonable postering regulations which have been in effect for about 4 years. There seems to be an attitude that you can ignore certain laws if they get in your way. If these regulations were followed, there would be an (uneasy) truce between those who vandalize/trash our streets and those (like me) who would like the postering ban re-instated.

I consider it all vandalism. But sometimes, vandalism is okay and sometimes, it’s not…!

You gotta be kidding. I consider ALL of this vandalism, so I can’t vote. It’s never OK. It’s ugly, it’s selfish, it’s unacceptable.

Yeah, is it ok to admit this isn’t our proudest post? We like some street art and get frustrated by tightly people’s undies get bunched over it. But then we see stuff like the tag scratched into the window of Volunteer Park Cafe and have a hard time mustering the enthusiasm to argue.

I think that some of the stickers and stencils are interesting and beautiful. They liven up the boring street signs and blank concrete walls. However the tagging is despicable.
What I find far more abhorrent are the cheap tacky condo buildings that are destined to become ghettos and landfill fodder. I wish they could be scrubbed away as easily as the spray paint.

i think that it depends on the graffiti…

though i could only vote for the last option on the poll, I think some sidewalk graffiti is positive and beautiful.
