The next neighborhood blogging adventure

Some adventures last forever. Some last 6 months. Way back in October, I was excited to announce that I was setting out to try something new: building a national network of neighborhood blogs like CHS. I worked to take MyZip.net from an idea to a working system with three elements that still make me smile:
  1. I paid people to write.
  2. I talked neighborhood blogging all day long.
  3. I worked with two great people to try to make it all happen. (Thanks Nate and Liz)
MyZip paid people to blog about their neighborhoods. But it was more than that. We turned people into neighborhood bloggers. In the process, I got a catbird seat to enjoy some of the best (and, yes, some of the not so best) place blogging... ever! The company I was working for -- Marchex -- recently made a business decision to shut down MyZip. I can't say more about the decision but I can say the end of MyZip meant my end at Marchex. The MyZip bloggers are getting paid one last time. The MyZip code of conduct is being retired. The sites like 98101.net and 89509.net are going away soon. Loose ends are being wrapped up. I'm not sure what's next for me. But I'm happy to say that neighborhood blogging lives on.

Bummer! But I have great confidence that you'll find another fabulous adventure. I continue to be inspired by the way you were able to take your excitement about neighborhood blogging and transpose it into a career--or at least a paying job--for however long.

Go forth, and good luck.

Had a feeling your "looking to drink at 11 am" post the other day was bad job news. Whoever runs Marchex, maybe they're wiser than Disney, which burned $1 billion on GO.com before giving me and 400 others the boot during the 2001 dot-bust. Take it from us, entrepreneurship really is possible (and neither of us has an entrepreneurial bone in his/her body) ... if you choose to go that route ... and you certainly have the smarts, the writing skills, the synergy inclinations, etc. that it seems to take. Are you still going to go to Minnesota? We just got RT $200 on NW!
