No new parking lot on Pine

(0 votes) ( report abuse ) ( )

We recently wrote about community activist Dennis Saxman mounting a new attack against Pine Street development. Got this note from Saxman that there won't be another parking lot on Pine -- at least not due to a Saxman-inspired development delay:

On Saturday, I received Judge Julie Spector's rulings on my case. The Order had been drafted by opposing counsel. It was not the least bit informative as to why she ruled as she did. Her rulings consisted of: Petitioner failed to meet his burden to establish that the Examiner violated the standards stated in RCW 36.70C.130(a)-(d); Petitioner's Petition is denied and the findings and decision of the Hearing Examiner is affirmed in all respects; and Petition for Review is dismissed with prejudice. This will in no way deter me from pursuing my appeal regarding the 1605 Bellevue Avenue project and continuing efforts to reform a process that is not working the way it was intended to work.

hooray!
This NIMBY BS is ridiculous. Capitol Hill is a very dense neighborhood and making new development take longer or more expensive is not in the best interests of affordable housing or high quality transit. You want lower prices? Let them build a million units! You want run down one story shacks? Drive development elsewhere so we can keep our one story QFCs, decaying shacks on Pike and "charming" gas stations on Pike and Broadway.

Great goals, poor tactics
I agree with Dennis that Seattle would benefit from stricter design standards and more community influence on development projects, but it's not clear to me how his effort to harass and stall the the Pine street project will bring about either. He should be pressuring the city council to pass the appropriate laws, or, if that fails, use the initiative process to get them passed. As it stands, his lawsuit is entirely frivolous.
