Sunday 08-31-08 @ the Broadway Farmers Market

From the Neighborhood Farmer's Market Alliance [nfma@seattlefarmersmarkets.org]

There is so much delicious summer fruit on the market tables now. Local farmers are harvesting sweet, ripe PEACHES, NECTARINES, APRICOTS, MELONS, BERRIES and PLUMS.

If you buy more than you can eat fresh, it's easy to make fruit compote or sauce and freeze it in jars: just chop and cook apples, peaches, berries or any other fruits (alone or together - for eg., peaches and berries make an awesome combination). Sugar is optional - some fruits are plenty sweet, especially when cooked. Thaw the compote any time you want to make a smoothie, or mix it into plain yogurt, top on pancakes, waffles or cereal, or use to bake into muffins or scones. (Melons are the only fruit this probably wont work well with!)

Looking ahead: on September 21 we’ll have a cooking demo by the fabulous Chef Jonathan Sundstrom of Lark and Licorous. Don’t miss this opportunity to watch a master chef in action, showing shoppers easy and delicious ways to use what fresh on the market tables now.

FYI: Sunset Magazine for Sept has a great article about Seattle’s neighborhood farmers markets, including Broadway.

The Broadway Farmers Market takes place every Sunday, 11 am - 3 pm, from May 11 through Nov. 23, in the lot behind the Bank of American at Broadway & E. Thomas. The market is operated by the Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and strengthening Washington's small family farms.

You can find information about all seven Neighborhood Farmers Markets at http://www.seattlefarmersmarkets.org.

The Broadway Sunday Farmers Market also accepts EBT/Quest cards (food stamps), as well as WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Coupons.
