Broadway Farmers Market Open Through Nov 23

From the Neighborhood Farmer's Market Alliance [nfma@seattlefarmersmarkets.org]

Fabulous Fall Harvests from Local Farms

October brings an amazing variety of fresh fruits and vegetables from our local farms to the market tables. Colorful carrots, tomatoes, and peppers come in red, orange, yellow, green and bi-colored. You can find purple cauliflower, white eggplant and golden beets, pink and blue potatoes, and every kind of braising green from yellow-stemmed chard to purple kale. These colors aren't just pretty to look at: the range of fresh flavors is truly a chef's delight. Plus, these beautiful hues herald an abundance of nutrients that simply can't be matched by any other source.

Much of summer's bounty is still being harvested through the end of October. You'll still find berries, plums, nectarines and melons on the tables, plus more and more varieties of apples, pears and Asian pears. On the vegetable front, you can also find sweet corn, the last of the summer squashes, shelling beans, cucumbers, cabbage, broccoli, turnips, all kinds of winter squashes, beautiful lettuces, pole beans and more…plus delicious cheeses, meats, baked goods, seafood, cut flowers, honey, and preserves.

The Broadway Sunday Farmers Market hosts the annual pumpkin decorating event for kids on Sunday, October 26, just in time for Halloween. There will be lots of glitter, sequins, pipe cleaners, paint and other wonderful decorations to inspire young artists. All pumpkins and materials supplied by the market, and kids of all ages are invited to decorate a pumpkin to take home with them. Decorating starts at 11 am.

November will bring more pumpkins, winter squashes, greens, potatoes and other root vegetables, with plenty of options for holiday meals and winter feasts. Chef Sabrina Tinsley of La Spiga will be the guest at the "Eat Local for Thanksgiving" cooking demo at the market on Nov. 9, showing shoppers delicious and easy ways to impress your hosts or guests at any holiday feast. Shoppers are encouraged to take the pledge to Eat Local for Thanksgiving - support local farms and get your ingredients at the Farmers Market! The cooking demo starts at noon on Nov 9.

The market also has live music on most Sundays from noon to 2 pm.

The Broadway Farmers Market takes place every Sunday, 11 am - 3 pm, from May 11 through Nov. 23, in the lot behind the Bank of American at Broadway & E. Thomas.

The market is operated by the Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and strengthening Washington's small family farms. You can find information about all seven Neighborhood Farmers Markets at http://www.seattlefarmersmarkets.org.

The Broadway Sunday Farmers Market also accepts EBT/Quest cards (food stamps), as well as WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Coupons.
