Interview with the tagger

The Obama-Barbarella mural graffiti episode shined a little light into the dark alleys of tagging culture putting the mural artist face-to-face, or e-mail to e-mail with taggers.

The exchange brings to mind my contact with a tagger from this summer via Facebook. Through a series of tips, I tracked down the name of a man who lives on Capitol Hill who, a few who claimed to know him said, was the notorious Syrup tagger.

While his profile was covered with graffiti applications and graphics, my interaction was less than fruitful. Here's the Facebook back and forth from this summer:

do you tag?

Not a snitch. I write about Capitol Hill and thought you -- if you're the same XXXXX people have told me about -- might tell me about why you tag. Some pissed off people gave me your name but they also might be full of shit.

well, somebody told me you tag so people already know and you haven't been locked up. But I'll leave you be. You can send mail to jseattle@gmail.com if you change your mind. Wish the etching would stop. The paint sucks but is easy to deal with. The etching is fucked up.

There you go. Do you know Syrup? Tell him to drop me a line.

I repeat:
I sometimes fantasize that taggers should be executed on the spot.

RE: I repeat:
I'd rather that taggers took art lessons. If the tagging is artistic, I am more tolerant of it.

to be fair
"do you tag?" as the first contact on FB from an unknown white guy who lives on Capitol Hill is a little weird. Lol. I can understand his response.

RE: to be fair
His response doesn't seem very confused. He may not have been Syrup but he knew what I was talking about.

Inconsistent
JSeattle: A few months ago you expressed your anger when your own property was tagged. Yet you tend to condone graffiti/tagging vandals if your judgment is that it is "street art." (who gives you the right to make this decision for the community?). Are you not being kind of inconsistent and hypocritical? Where is the anger when public spaces (or others' private property) are tagged?

RE: Inconsistent
What are you talking about, Calhoun? And who said I was making a decision for the community?

your non-reply
When someone responds to direct questions with other questions, it means that they cannot or will not address the issues raised. Your reply, JSeattle, is a classic example of this.
