Day in the life Capitol Hill Seattle live thread

Remember the time capsule celebration of the arrival of settlers on Alki 157 years ago? Here's where you can tell the future what you were up to on Capitol Hill today.

Here is my less-than-historically-notable diary thus far:

  • Midnight:30: Went to bed after covering the Republican at Summit fire (or Belmont or whatever street it ends up being listed on).
  • 6:30a: Woke up to 1-year-old hand-to-the-face
  • 8:30a: Called a potential beta site owner for Neighborlogs
  • 9:30a: Planted butt at Fuel on 19th where I am still working despite sunshine day outside.

Hoping to make it out and about to get a few pictures, etc. But help me out -- what are you up to? Comments please.

My day
Up at 6, on the phone from home at 7, drove to Redmond at 7:20. I hate driving to Redmond, so I hate mornings when I have to be on the phone and can't vanpool.
Noticed while on the backroad from 10th to Montlake that the leaves in the bike lanes are making that trip pretty risky for bikers, who have to drive in the road with the cars to avoid the piles of slick leaves. Get on it, Seattle!

RE: My day
I wish people were more proactive about cleaning up their properties, especially when the sidewalks and streets are affected. As a pedestrian and cyclist, it can be pretty nerve-wracking to get around sometimes.

Sort of typical
Up at 7, made lunches, coffee, breakfast, took dog outside for his morning constitutional, fed dog, woke husband, biked to hospital for pre-op appointment, biked/bused to UW for class, 3 hour break between classes now, studying, surfing the net, studying, go to class at 2:30, then bike/bus back up the hill, stopping at Miller Park Community Center for Full Circle Farms CSA box, drive dog to Magnuson off-leash dog park before it gets too dark (hopefully), head home, meet husband at Microsoft Commuter Bus Stop with dog (highlight of dog's day), head home, study, make dinner, study, surf the net, study, read part of a book, go to bed.

On a real typical day, throw in some volunteer work (Big Brothers Big Sisters or Jubilee Women's Center), a 3rd class, and take out the hospital visit. Also add in biking the entire way to the UW down 23rd at 30mph (I've hit 37mph before, but don't want a speeding ticket) 5 days a week.

RE: Sort of typical
Speaking of, I read my comment and realize I need to spend more time outside my apartment in the neighborhood instead of all of my time at the UW or driving the dog to and from Magnuson. I wish we had a better off-leash dog park than Pillars...my dog still hates to go there.

(hmmm, I'm replying to your reply, actually, but no option to do that!)

I know what you mean about wishing you spent more time in your apartment. I started to say more about my day, but realized that absolutely none of it will be spent on the hill. Sigh.

RE: Sort of typical
Odd. What's wrong with the Pillars park? Terra likes it just fine, and we've never had serious issues there

RE: Sort of typical
My dog is extremely shy around strangers. The man who watches over the park repeatedly tried to play with my dog by jumping at him, skipping over to him (and spraying gravel), and other attempts to make friends with my dog, despite repeated pleas from me to stop. My dog and since associated the park with this man. When I do take him there, he's ok if there are other dogs already there but as soon as he sees the man, he runs to the gate and wants to go immediately.

RE: Sort of typical
My dogs aren't too fond of Pillars, either. The gravel's pretty rough, and it irritates their paws. (I suppose they could wear booties, but... no.) I wish there were another dog park on the Hill. We end up taking ours to Magnuson or Marymoor on the weekend.

so far...
up early with a cranky and feverish son. still dark outside. i guess it's almost winter. sigh.
but signs of blue sky through the clouds this morning made for a better mood as I, too, started on the dreary trek to Redmond. (carpool, Arboreality?)

stopped at Volunteer Park Cafe for my extra-short Americano and scone. love VPC.

meanwhile, Little Big Noise and mom will make the short walk to his pre-school, which is only a few blocks from home (we live up in the vast northern kingdom of St. Mark's area).

i'll submit another update when i head home, when i'm actually back in CHS...

I've decided to try doing the same on my blog here: http://blog.robobabe.net/2008/11/13/a-day-in-the-life/
Seeing it in print makes me feel like a slacker! :)

a day in the life
It's my weekend, so I'm taking it easy and being social. Yesterday I walked down to the post office, had lunch at HaNa, browsed at World Beads for an hour (and spent far too much money), and hung out at Vivace for almost two hours with a book. Days like that are why I love living here.

Today I returned home at 8am to see if building's maintenance guy has started ripping out the wallboard yet (been staying elsewhere while management is fighting a massive mold infestation in the closet caused by leaking shower pipes), which, to my dismay, he hasn't. Oh well. When driving home, was delighted to see DeLuxe's holiday window decorations. I know it's not even Thanksgiving yet, but it made me smile.

Backed up the Macbook. Toodled around on the internet in the comfort of my bedroom. (I miss you, bedroom!) Took a quick jaunt up to U Village to get some quick repairs done on said Macbook, and in about 20 minutes I'm heading down to Tukwila to test drive a smart car and have lunch with some friends. Tonight, I have a Rock Band date with my best bud, and probably martinis at Dilettante's to finish up the night. La!

Alas, tomorrow I have to return to work in the wilds of South King County. Love my job, just not the location.

my day
12am - finished up Battlestar Galactica Season2.5 Disc2 from Netflix.
1am - setup up my new MobileMe account on my iPhone but got to tired to finish dealing with it. went to bed
8:30am - woke up, showered, breakfast, put clothes in the dryer, gather up my crap, kiss bf good-bye.
9:30am - walked up to Broadway Post Office to mail DVD back to Netflix, walked down to work near Pier 69
10am - meeting, finished setting up MobileMe account, deal with email, ppt decks, etc.
12pm - made lunch in work cafeteria (sandwich on essential bread - 1 slice olive and 1 slice garlic) with swiss, spinach, cukes, carrots, edamame, sunflower seeds, cranberries, bell peppers). Ate lunch at desk. Got distracted by sunlight. Listened to Joni Mitchell. Caught up on email, pinged people to finish up tasks.
1:30 - listen/watch train pass. walk outside in the sun for a bit and get a coffee since i'm super sleepy today. then more work, meetings, etc.
6pm-ish - walk back up to the hill/home.
6:30pm-ish - find something at home to eat - maybe swing by Safeway on 15th for ingredients. vacuum. little excersize tv on demand.
8ish - make sure my HDRecorder will tape My Name is Earl, The Office & 30 Rock. then head to Vivace and work on learning Java.
11ish - home. See bf. Maybe start Disc3 of Battlestar or maybe listen to him play piano/guitar while I catch up on Google Reader or email or watch the TV from earlier tonight.

Pretty typical day. Variations will replace vacuuming with other house cleaning or taking care of the fish tank, and replace the super geeky stuff(Java & Battlestar) with include Bikram yoga, or going... read more

I love this post
but is justinc jseattle?

Anyway, up at 7; coffee for me & my bff; send her off to work & grab an almost soggy paper from the stoop. (I second your winter sigh, pffft, though today looks lovely from my window at SU.)

Right, SU: 8am work on notes, read P-I, skim NYTimes, re-read assignment for class (Chuang Tzu; Taoism is fun!); shower, shave, savor my commute--a walk through Cal Anderson Park. Teach a class; have a lunch & see a talk about student evaluations; meet with students.
And then 2:15: read CHS! Yay! (Fire on Belmont? Oh no!)

3:45--one more class; walk back through the park. Think about dinner; look forward to spending Friday writing at Vivace.

Watch yesterday's Daily Show & Colbert. Get in bed with bff.

4p: realize I forgot to hillku today, hillku
7p: dinner with my favorite geographer

10:30p: sleep

Where I left off
As if the start of my day weren't bo-ring enough, wait until you see the rest, future. Boy are you lucky to be in the future when things are more interesting.

11:30a: Turned back into jseattle, left Fuel
11:45a: Talked to another beta hopeful on my iphone (iphone reference for sake of future readers who will say, wow, they had iphones way back then?!?)
12:00p: Ate lunch at home, leftovers over sink
12:01-2p: Got a bunch of crap done, all of it hunched over laptop. Called the various public information officer recordings at SPD, etc that I like to listen to every few hours because I'm like that.
2p: Did daddy thing for awhile until mom got work nailed down. Made up for crappy lunch by making adventuresome Friday food plans at the Brazil/Portuguese place on Broadway. Wish me luck. You too, future.
2:45p: Walked with the little fella along Aloha. 20 minutes to go 20 feet. Leisure.
3:45p: Managed to find time for a blog post and then twittered and futzed around with linkedin, etc. for too long
5:15p: What the hell! Ate dinner over sink. Two meals like this when everybody's watching? Bad.
6:30p: Did reverse commute to Redmond to play soccer. Man it must suck to commute on 520 heading back to Seattle. We won, by the way.
10:30p: More 'puter time. I probably need a few more hobbies. No breaking news tonight. To bed. Night, night future.
