Capitol Hill Cheap Eats

I had a chance to stop by Oddfellows this morning and I liked the look of the place (a cross between a French bistro and a schoolhouse) and the food & coffee as well.

I had the breakfast panini (sans bacon) and was happy with my choice.  They have a few magazines at the cafe, and I browsed through the Seattle Magazine (January 08 issue) looking for their recommendations for Cheap Eats in Capitol Hill.  Below is their carnivore-centric list:

I love cafe Presse on 12th ave near Seattle U. I love the french bread and everything on the menu. Prices are reasonable too.

cheap eats?
eh, i'd argue that the prices for those recommendations (and the other ones in the seattle magazine issue you reference) aren't all that cheap. average, yes. but cheap? not to my way of thinking.

Nothing is really cheap in Seattle. I will say for the effort and the great food, one might indulge once in a while.

Three cheers
Taco Gringos has never let me down, I adore 'em. At $2 it's a steal.
The poutine at Smith is crazy good, but it's the only poutine I've ever had.
Two thumbs up for the drunken chicken sandwich, too... so that's a pretty good list! I bet the other stuff is similarly excellent, I should go get some. :-)

I agree
I ate at Oddfellows Sunday late morningish. The goat cheese, beet salad with sweet almonds was really tasty. Even better, was the woman who was picking up dirty dishes in the dining room. Her "Good morning!" included a smile, and even a look in the eyes (in Seattle!?). I thought she was the owner she was so vested in her hello but it turns out not to be. Just someone glad to be employed right now, I guess. Oddfellows gets 22 thumbs up from me!

$5 for fries and gravy at Skillet? That ain't cheap!

$2 for a taco! Not cheap either. You know what is cheap? The taco bus on Rainier where a much better taco is $1.25 and a Mulita with cheese and avocado is $1.50.

Things I eat when I'm feeling cheap
Not necessarily cheap - cheap-er?
+Vita's custom hot pocket sandwich thingies
+Than Brother's medium pho
+Sweet tater fries at Smith
+King's Teriyaki lunch deals
+Toasted baguette, jam at Volunteer Park Cafe. Yes. I order toast.

And dudeman, you sound like you would enjoy supping with my father who claimed he once ate ketchup on saltines to save money. Please don't make your kids drink those little cream tubs instead of letting them order milk if you ever splurge and take them out for breakfast.

Don't forget Seattle Central's Culinary School
When it's serving the public, it's one hell of a deal. I really enjoy it when they opt to do it tasting style. If you show up for that around 12:30, markdowns could get you crazy deals like two slices of cheescake for a buck.

Good add. Sparklingallison wrote about SCCC's culinary options back in June.

Wild Boar Sloppy Joe?
Hopefully, that is just a cool name and if not I guess I shouldn't knock it until I try it. Another site to find cheap eats.
