Nightlife rumors: King Cobra becomes fact. Pony in a flower shop?

I have very little business writing up bar and club news right now — haven’t been out past 11p in a long time and I don’t, currently, know any bartenders. Fortunately, Cap Hill’s nightlife gets plenty of attention from other sources.

  • Barely 1 year old, Pike’s King Cobra is shutting down. The bartender confirmed for The Stranger’s music blog so it must be true. First saw the rumor here. King Cobra was born from the rubble of the Kincora as management and staff shifted up Hill. The Kincora, you might recall, had to make way for a development project which ultimately made way for a gravel parking lot. Cobra took over the abandoned husk of Sugar which abruptly closed down in fall of 2007 the day after this dancefloor shooting. And now, I’m embarrassed to admit, I cannot remember what came before Sugar. Old timers? Anyway, King Cobra was reportedly up for sale over the summer but the city licensing database still lists Kincora Pike St, LLC as the legal name for the business. Now The Kincora is officially dead. Or is it?!

  • Meanwhile, I’m much more equipped to talk to people who run flower shops. I talked to Ed Shinbo who is one of the owners of Acacia Flowers on Madison at 12th Ave about this rumor posted on captothehill. C to the H said they heard the imminent redevelopment of the lot that houses Acacia could mean the return of parasitic bar lifeform, Pony. Pony, if you follow the logic, would take over the flower shop space in the interim before demolition and construction. But the flower shop owner said such a move would be news to him and that he expects to be in that space between Madison and Union for the remaining duration of his lease — 24 months. If Pony does rear its head in the space, Ed suggests they’ll have their work cut out for them getting building access and elements like restrooms upgraded enough to do bar business in the space. Basically, Ed says, it ain’t no Cha Cha. But what do either of us know about that.

Holy crap, was that more of your computer assisted reporting? Nice work.

I got 916 earlier from Twitter

The rest don’t even ring a bell.

I remembered Velocity but my secret computer source for the rest was: searching on the Stranger website – all of their club listings are searchable (at least back to 2001) but take a little bit of wading through (you know what that’s like).

I like how the Comet just keeps on going though. I went there in ’91 and it wasn’t new then.
