Illegal Interlaken dumping spoils Earth Day

Central District News got a report of illegal dumping today — Earth Day of all days — in Interlaken Park:

2:48PM  – 1650 Interlaken Dr. E  – Illegal Dumping
10 min ago the caller saw two males dump appliance boxes into the park. White van, white truck with markings for a [name redacted] national appliance service chain. Nice – dumping trash in a public park on Earth Day

Visiting Interlaken, we found the pile of cardboard still there, near the road that twists through the park — six or seven large cardboard appliance boxes for refrigerators and stoves.

CHS contacted the company — a national appliance service chain with offices in Shoreline — the caller reported seeing on the vehicle that dumped the boxes.

We told the person we talked with that a local appliance company had been seen dumping cardboard in a Seattle park. “That’s pretty obnoxious,” he said. “That’s a waste of our public money.” When he was informed him that it was workers for his company allegedly doing the dumping, he said that he had not yet been contacted about the incident. “I’d have to talk to my crew,” he said. “We’re supposed to bring the boxes here for the bin we have, not dump them in the park or anything.”

The person we spoke with, who manages but does not own the business, said his company has a contract with a service provider that maintains a recycling bin located at the business. “There’s no reason to do this,” he said.

Seattle Police Department confirms that two officers responded to the scene and that there is an active investigation into the incident.

How hard is it to get rid of cardboard boxes in the right way? I saw the Parks department had closed off Interlaken this morning, I wonder if this is why. But what’s the big problem? It’s not like you need a crane to pick ’em up, right?
