Watch out for nighttime Olive Way offramp closures

Sound Transit’s prep work for light rail tunneling will require the Olive Way off-ramp from I-5 northbound to be closed for a few nights over the next week or so. Also, be on the lookout for some public art to be on the move.

As opening day for Link light rail quickly approaches, work on extending light rail to the University of Washington is already underway. In 2010 the tunnel boring machine that will construct the light rail tunnels between Capitol Hill and Downtown Seattle will start digging south from Capitol Hill. Before it reaches the Pine Street area, Sound Transit must prepare the ground under I-5 for the arrival of the tunnel boring machine.

Although the major construction work will start in May, Sound Transit will begin some of the preliminary work over the next few weeks. Here are some of the things you may notice:

  • The Olive Way off-ramp from northbound I-5 will be closed several nights over the next two weeks to allow crews to do survey work and install instrumentation on the walls of I-5. The ramp will be closed from 10 pm to 4:30 am for three nights this week, Tuesday, March 31 through Thursday, April 2. Drivers can also expect closures next week. You can find the latest closure information for this project online at >http://www.soundtransit.org/x9885.xml
  • Starting Monday April 13, changes will be made to the curb and sidewalk in front of the vacant lot on Pine Street next to I-5 to provide contractor access during construction. The contractor will also remove some of the landscaping, and re-locate the art (“Eat, Drink, Be Merry”) to another location. This work is expected to take about a week to complete.

I definitely wont be missing Eat Drink and Be Merry! That space needs something bigger. They’re in a big wide open space, but they’re these small, mostly transparent, hard to make out figures… they seem out of place. I’m sure they’d look better somewhere else.

Yeah, somewhere else. Say … South Center.
