A Cap Hill Independence Day: Cal Anderson picnic, Molly Moon root beer floats, live music

Do you want your 4th of July to be about a record 60,000 people crushed into Gas Works park or an increased police presence to handle larger than normal crowds in Eastlake trying to see the city’s only fireworks display this year?

Or would you rather your 4th of July be about Capitol Hill community, a picnic in the park in the heart of the city, live music, good food and goofy games? CHS will take the latter please.

Below are the details for Capitol Hill’s 4th of July celebration in Cal Anderson park. If you want to catch the Gas Works fireworks over Lake Union (remember, no Elliott Bay fireworks this year), this CHS comment thread has some good Hill viewpoints.

The Cal Anderson Park Alliance announces the 7th Annual Capitol Hill Independence Day Community Picnic: a day of music, food and fun to celebrate our country and community. This free event is open to the public and will be held at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill, Saturday, July 4th from 12 to 5 pm.

Bands hitting the stage all day will include kids-jammers Recess Monkey, the urban Latin beats of Picoso, the lo-fi pop of Katharine Hepburn’s Voice, and the funky soul sounds of Lady A and the Baby Blues Funk Band, not to mention buskers galore.

Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream will make root beer floats, and delicious treats will be available from Via Tribunali as well as Wandering Wieners. Caffé Vita will be on-site with coffee; attendees will also be able to enjoy free cotton candy.

Party-goers will be able to participate in the All-Park Parade, try the11th Avenue Inn Root Beer tasting garden, and get involved with other free activities including a Spin Art Bike, patriotic tie-dye, a pie-eating contest, Urban Family Portraits (Any type of family!), Pet/human look-alike contest and more!

The annual Capitol Hill Independence Day Community Picnic is CAPA’s signature event. It is our gift to the neighborhood, which, in turn, brings its vitality, variety and spirit to the park. The Cal Anderson Park Alliance (CAPA) is a community-based volunteer organization dedicated to generating creative, innovative activities, programs and events to activate Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill in Seattle. Our goal is to build on and sustain healthy, safe and varied uses for the park. Cal Anderson Park can be reached via Metro Routes.

I am really excited about root beer floats. Is this a special thing, or do they always have them on sale? I hadn’t noticed the few times I’ve been. Yum…

sounds good up to the cost of all this unless you bring your own sack food

I love free potluck stuff, or very cheap as in 25 cent hot dogs

wonder about what it will cost in a depression

and, interesting, Cal Anderson park, named after the queer guy is not used for much gay pride, but, tons of stuff for the week later
