A Mini Cooper struck a parked car crashed on Madison this morning, flipping the small sports car on its side and leaving its driver stuck inside until emergency crews arrived to free her. The accident took place just before 9 AM near Madison and Broadway directly in front of the International House of Pancakes.
UPDATE 4:23 PM:
Seattle Police Department spokesperson Renee Witt confirmed that the incident was a 'single car accident' but said a cause was not determined. The 57-year-old woman involved in the accident was not issued a citation.
UPDATE 1:10 PM:
From our comments, an eyewitness explains what he saw:
I was driving just in front of the mini this morning and I don't think she hit the parked car. I immediately stopped and ran back to check on her. The parked SUV was not damaged in any way. I *think* (I only saw it in my rearview) that she hit the driveway curb and raised tree root past that and that caused the flip. If she hit the parked car, it was after the car was already on its side.
We have a call out to SPD to see if they can clarify and let us know any additional details about the accident.
The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
A woman who was driving behind the Mini said the car was traveling west and struck a white vehicle parked along Madison in front of the IHOP across from Seattle University. A nearby sign marked the area as closed to parking when the accident occurred.
There was no apparent damage to the parked vehicle and no other injuries from the accident.
A large contingent of police officers, firefighters and emergency personnel convened on the intersection which was closed until a tow truck could be called out to right the Mini and take it away.
