Still time (and room) for your park to be included in Hill’s Park(ing) Day Central Park

The mostly empty People’s Parking Lot at Belmont and Pine occasionally bursts forth with life. There was a guerilla dance party. There was Capitol Hill Garage Sale Day. And, next Friday, there will be a park. About a dozen of them, actually.

Friday, September 18th is Park(ing) Day when people across the country create temporary pockets of open space in the middle of cities from coast to coast. There will be mini-parks on the streets of Seattle in many parts of the city and on Capitol Hill. The center of the action will be Park(ing) Day Central Park which will transform the People’s P-Lot into a series of group parks with music and various entertainments.

So far, eleven mini-parks are planned for the space including a space created by Seattle Arts and Lectures, a little park project by Capitol Hill Housing, and a co-working park space by Office Nomads (CHS sponsor). And the good news is there is still time — and room — for you to create a park. All you need is time and a little imagination to be part of the fun on the 18th. If you’re interested send a mail to [email protected] or visit http://peoplesparkinglot.blogspot.com/

In addition to having some fun and helping to spread the word about the importance of open space, you’ll also be eligible for a prize. CHS is proudly serving as one of the judges for the Seattle Park(ing) Day competition. We recommend you include a crow or two in your design.

The Capitol Hill Community Council is really looking forward to Park(ing) Day – along with co-sponsoring the event with People’s Parking Lot, we’re going to have our own mini park that day, “Paradise Unpaved”. I hope that all the CHSers get a chance to stop by Central Park on Sept. 18th!
