CHS-V: The McGinn Campaign

Regardless of the outcome of the still undecided Mayors race, one of the biggest stories coming out of this election cycle is the grassroots, all volunteer campaign run by Mike McGinn.  McGinn was outspent and out staffed by the Mallahan campaign and rarely led in the polls, but won the primary and is currently in the lead after the first three batches of votes have been counted.  I went to the McGinn Campaign Headquarters yesterday to talk to the volunteers to find out what it was like working on the groundbreaking campaign.

The election is over. One or the other will win with a bare margin and NO mandate.

This is getting boring. Looks like EVERY campaign I have ever worked on ... sorry to tell the star struck ... this, with only a few variations, is the way it is always done.(most campaign offices are a big mess, this looks orderly, how weird)

And, had he did a better campaign, Mc Ginn would have been elected with a clear majority and a real mandate.

What is all the excitement about amateur night? In some matters, experts are in order.

Take a clue from Ref: 71 - both experts and volunteers, they won a very difficult state campaign. And used tons of money wisely for brilliant media.

If only McGinn's headquarters had been a big mess, he'd have gotten a mandate?
No, the real question is if McGinn does come out the winner, can he find more people who are willing to
volunteer to get things done, because those motivated by money only will cling stubbornly to their
current city jobs and the civil service system will by and large let them.

I grant you, a messy desk is a sign of creativity...

How was Ref. 71 successful? Because people figured it out that it was a question of fairness and decency,
and didn't have to threaten their sacred take on "marriage."
