Shooting at Union and Boylston - UPDATE

Capitol Hill Seattle has been alerted to an apparent shooting near the intersection of Union and Boylston. At 5:55 PM, emergency units were dispatched to 702 E Union St. for an assault with weapons response.

We received the following e-mail from an eyewitness:

Shooting on Union between Boylston and Harvard. One guy shot, was conscious and speaking when police arrived.

6:48PM - Shooting reported at Union and Boylston - A stretch of Union is cordoned off tonight as police investigate an
apparent shooting in a parking lot next to an apartment building at the corner of Union and
Boylston.
7:12PM - Wrist Watch - A man at the scene who said he was the person to call 911 said the victim told him the shooter wanted his wrist watch. The man told CHS the victim was shot in the upper chest. The victim told the man that the shooter was a white male driving a black Mercedes Benz.
7:14PM - Drive by - Another witness at the scene said an officer told her the incident was a 'drive by' shooting and that police were looking for a Mercedes Benz that may be involved.
7:15PM - Car struck - A woman trying to return to her car after work was stuck behind the line of police tape. An officer told her car parked in the pay lot next to the apartments was hit by the gunfire. She was stuck at the scene as her car was processed for evidence.
7:17PM - Victim's condition - SeattleCrime.com has information on the victim's condition:
The man was alert and conscious when officers and medics arrived, but he is being taken to Harborview to be treated for what looks like a fairly serious gunshot wound. According to Seattle Police Department spokesman Jeff Kappel, the victim has life-threatening injuries.
7:45PM - Suspect at large - Meanwhile, the shooter in this crime remains at large. Police confirmed that the suspect fled in an automobile and say the are looking for a 'dark sedan.' We'll follow up with any updates on the manhunt and the victim's condition.
8:14PM - Bullet holes - KIRO is reporting that the suspect's car has '3 to 4 bullet holes' in its door:
Police are looking for the shooter and a vehicle that may be connected to the shooting: a black, four-door, 2000 Mercedes with dark tinted windows and shiny rims. The vehicle has 3 to 4 bullet holes on the driver-side door.

Was the victim armed?
8:29PM - First aid - Matt Irvin, the man who said he was the person to call 911, also said he helped administer aid to the victim and tried to slow his bleeding as they waited for emergency crews to arrive. Irvin told CHS that he had heard shootings near his home before he lived in Seattle so knew somebody needed help. He said he and other people in the area did what they could to slow the bleeding and provided the victim with a pillow.
9:48PM - Shooting at Union and Boylston - Reviewing the police radio recording from the incident confirms the previously reported details and adds a few. A dispatcher said a caller heard six shots and reported that a male is screaming in the street at 5:55 PM. Moments later, a dispatcher says there is a male on the line saying he has been shot in chest. The victim reports that the shooter fled in a black Mercedes 4-door that left southbound through an alley. Additional information from the scene is that the vehicle is a 2000 Mercedes with tinted windows that was seen traveling west on Spring, possibly toward the freeway. An officer radios in that another witness said that the car had three to four bullet holes in its driver's-side door.
9:55PM - Shooting at Union and Boylston - More from the scanner archive. The suspect was reported as a white male wearing a red shirt.

An officer makes a request at one point for the victim's multiple cell phones to be collected for evidence at Harborview. She says the victim said he was shot with a .22 caliber gun. Update: SPD brief says the victim believes he was shot with a .40 or .45 caliber gun.
9:32AM - Shooting at Union and Boylston - The SPD is out with a brief on the incident. Nothing new but confirms much of the information we gathered and corrects the information that the gun was a .22. One curious aspect -- the police report has the wrong location for the shooting. The intersection of E. Union and Boylston is just under a mile from 7th and Union location noted in the headline of the blotter blog post.

Man shot in chest near 7th and Union

On 11/20/09, at approximately 6:00 p.m., the victim was observed in a parking lot directly north of the 700 block of E. Union St. Witnesses heard 4 to 6 shots, observed a black Mercedes flee S/B from the parking lot, and the victim fall to the ground.

Arriving officers located the victim on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim stated he was shot by the person fleeing in the black Mercedez. He stated that the gun appeared to be a .40 or .45 cal. The victim described the suspect as a white male wearing a red shirt.

The victim was treated by Seattle Fire and transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. Officers located casings and bullets at the scene. Numerous witnesses in the area were interviewed. Area search for suspect was negative. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 911.

1:25PM - Shooting at Union and Boylston - One report that we've been trying to find out more about came from KIRO's information that the suspect vehicle had three to four bullet holes in its driver-side door. SPD spokesperson Renee Witt said that there was no indication that the car had bullet holes and that the victim in the shooting was not armed. It's possible KIRO's report confused information about another vehicle in the parking lot that was hit by gunfire.
6:40PM - Shooting at Union and Boylston - Some more details from the scene from the CHS comments below:
I own the SUV hit in the parking lot. It appears only 3 shots were fired. One hit victim. One hit my passenger door and lodged inside, which was retrieved by police. Other ricocheted off pavement and hit my passenger rear window.

I live pretty close by
I was watching TV around 5pm ish and was wondering why I kept hearing a helicopter flying above.
Out of curiosity I went to this website and this was the first story to pop up. I think I just put two and two together. It's really scary. I used to ride my bike through that area about 5 nights a week on the way home from work when I lived on Boren. Now I'm on Belmont so I take a slightly different route. Still scary tho. I hope the victim heals up well and is ok. I'm glad we have some good citizens out there in cap hill willing to help a stranger in the time of need.

I'm the woman who owned the SUV hit by gunfire
I own the SUV hit in the parking lot. It appears only 3 shots were fired. One hit victim. One hit my passenger door and lodged inside, which was retrieved by police. Other ricocheted off pavement and hit my passenger rear window.

I would be surprised if the .22 bullet went through the door of an SUV--for the shot that was lodged in the door, did it do anything more than dent the metal?

wow...that was close...did you want a hug? christ man, how about the guy who was shot for his watch...who cares about you and what u think would happen if u left work early...maybe if i left work early last week sometime i would have been in an accident, or a drive by.....douche...
