CHS, doing its best ‘Get Jesse’ impersonation, passed this note along to SDOT today. We’ll let you know what we hear back.

subject: Boylston at Pine sidewalk problemHi —
A capitolhillseattle.com reader sent us this picture of a blocked sidewalk on the east side of Boylston near the intersection with Pine. It appears to be leftover debris from some tree work possibly related to the recent pedestrian improvements in the area or when the BMW business moved out of the adjacent building.
It’s blocking the sidewalk though people have cleared a path through it but still looks bad. Who is responsible for clearing it up?
Thanks,

The mess has been there for weeks with no sign that anybody is doing anything about it. We walked by it a few hundred times before getting the e-mailed picture and thinking, yeah, somebody should clean that up.
I can’t remember when it was, but it was about a month ago. Really a bummer, because this street between Pike and Pine seems to always have smokers hanging out (which I like to avoid). But with one sidewalk blocked, there’s only one option.
The city does a very poor job of cleaning up after street jobs. I have called the city before to pick up abandoned barricades and they sent someone out to pick them up. However i don’t have the number handy now
SDOT is 386-1206
Is when I first noticed this broken tree. I remember how violent it looked, but I couldn’t figure out if the destruction was natural or man-made.
If it weren’t closing time , I swear to gawd I’d go vigilante on that mess myself and drop the refuse on the city’s doorstep…
As it is, I’ve been drinking and ain’t going out this late, and will likely forget by tomorrow. *shrug* Instead I’ll grumble about it online *oh wait…*
Rain check’ll have to do on that vigilantism.
Soz.
I used to live in the Recherche Apartments across the street from this tree. It was hit by a car full of people who left R Place very drunk this past summer. The tree was pretty damaged (most of the bark was stripped clear with very visible cracks in its trunk). I think that was the cause of the trees destruction. Probably a strong wind gust did the rest.
Thanks for the alert about the debris on the sidewalk. It appears that its cause was a large tree limb falling. An SDOT crew visited the site this morning and cleaned it up, so the walkway is now open for pedestrians to use. If any sidewalk or road problems arise in the future, just call 684-ROAD and we’ll be happy to address them.
