Chihuly comes to Broadway

There are lots of Dale Chihuly spottings on Capitol Hill. Come spring, there will be one more place to find him: the lobby of the soon-to-open Broadway Building mixed-use project.

Organizers of the Blitz: Capitol Hill Arts Walk say they are planning an event for April to unveil a new installation by the Pacific Northwest glass artist as part of the walk.

Chihuly’s installations can be found in many Seattle locations including Benaroya Hall and the Convention Center and he’s somewhat of a local choice for Capitol Hill art — we’ve been told he and his wife have a home in Madison Valley (or was it Park — not sure).

The Broadway Building is a Hunters Capital development. In addition to the Chihuly art, the building will feature retail and office space, student housing and apartment units. It will also feature some great views of Cal Anderson park and the action at Bobby Morris playfield, apparently. Here are the stats:

Retail (approx. 14,000sf; contact Real Retail for more information on retail opportunities)

Office (approx. 12,000sf)

Residential Apartments (approx. 100 units)

Seattle Central Community College International Student Loft Apartments (approx. 27 units)

To be completed in December 2009

110,000 square feet: Mixed Use – Retail/Office/Multi-Family

Here’s a video of one of the apartment units from the developer:

But that’s a sticker for Cthulhu. As in Lovecraft’s monster.

Two stickers down, the one that says “imperfect”.

Perfect choice: Chihuly is the Subway of the art world.

Dale Chihuly was, as recently as Aug 09, making his residence on
NW 50th St.
– as least as far as official voting reocrds are concerned.

A (lovecraftian glassblower?) Cthuhuly is a great idea, though . . .

This is what million-dollar condo projects bring us: sameness.

1. They’re not condos. It’s a mixed-use development.
2. What would you rather go in there? Another indie-coffee shop?
3. The apartments are going to be income restricted, making them actually affordable for people that don’t make millions to live in.

But hey, thanks for trying. :)

I’m actually really looking forward to this. Last night at the Blitz! meeting we were discussing what’s going to happen here. It should be a pretty awesome event.

Dale Chihuly sucks. That’s all.
