Reworked Hillside reopens as Sage Cafe

We got a reader tip weeks ago but neglected to get the word out. But now the shop is reopened, reconfigured and renamed and the media release is out — 15th Ave’s Hillside Quickie is now Sage Cafe. Along with sister restaurant Plum Bistro, Sage will probably continue to make Hill vegans — and those who love em — happy.

Here’s the PR:

Anthony Bourdain: “Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn. To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living. Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, and an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It’s healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I’ve worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold. Oh, I’ll accommodate them, I’ll rummage around for something to feed them, for a ‘vegetarian plate’, if called on to do so. Fourteen dollars for a few slices of grilled eggplant and zucchini suits my food cost fine.”

reading Anthony Bourdain is like reading Leviticus. There is always something he’s against.

Railing against vegetarians and vegans is fine, if that makes ya happy. But I have had so much delicious stuff at Hillside Quickie and Plum that I return again and again — and I don’t have a moral problem with eating animals.

(I do have efficiency and environmental reasons for trending vegetarian, but that’s neither here nor there.)

Check these places out, I think you’ll be glad ya did.

You bet – yum.

But – at what a steep cost? Veggies are cheap and when buying pounds can make a lot of food.

Why are these place so expensive?

I can create a four veggie plate – sliced and drizzled tomatoes, baked sweet potato, some version of tofu and two fruits for a couple of bucks. Why go to eat at these places and pay $20.00?

The old time veggie place were cheap — not any more.

I’ve had many great meals at the Quickie but I would appreciate smaller portions and cheaper prices.

Two of my roommates (who would regularly go for brunch and sandwiches at HQ) and I went to “Sage Cafe” this morning.
We were a little confused when we walked by and the place was completely empty. Their brunch now consists of about six options of different takes on french toast / waffles / crepes. We contemplated leaving because they’d gotten rid of the two dishes that my roommate really liked, and significantly hiked up the prices.

The ricotta and pear crepes were great, but the french toast was rubbery fried sandwich bread and some sliced bananas. Those two plates were $25 plus tip. It’s great and all that Plum seems to be doing well, but making a carbon copy with awful seating and boring food was a terrible idea. After that, I don’t think any of us will ever go again.
