What’s next for Capitol Hill light rail? Construction update and status meeting

We posted recently about the start of Sound Transit’s ‘Phase 2’ of construction of the Capitol Hill light rail station. Here are more details on what the next steps of Phase 2 will entail in the work zone near Broadway and E. Denny and a Sound Transit construction update meeting planned for January 14. We’re also keeping track on the progress of Sound Transit’s plan to apply for a noise variance so that contractors can work round-the-clock to complete the station and tunneling by 2016. Sound Transit says its application is “currently under review by the City of Seattle.” But, according to the city, Sound Transit’s application is still in draft form and no public hearings have yet been scheduled.

Here are the latest construction notes from Sound Transit:

  • Burying overhead wires and removing utility poles along E. Denny Way between 10th and Harvard avenues (this work is being conducted by Comcast and Seattle City Light).

  • Relocating underground utilities on E. Denny Way. In addition, the Seattle Department of Transportation will install a new traffic signal at the intersection of Broadway Ave. and E. Denny Way.
  • “Jet grouting” the soil near E. Denny Way. Jet grouting involves injecting the soil with a cement-like substance to improve stability.
  • Removing three trees in the northwest corner of Cal Anderson Park and several street trees along E. Denny Way.

After the utility work is complete, Sound Transit reminds that the portion of E. Denny Way between Broadway and 10th Avenue will remain closed for up to six years while work continues to complete the underground station and tunnels.

You can learn more about the Phase 2 work, ask about the noise variance and more at the upcoming Sound Transit-hosted construction kick-off meeting.
