Free Pancakes at IHOP

Strawberry Pancakes @ IHOP

God knows they’re not part of First Hill or Central District.

So, if you didn’t already think of IHOP as part of Capitol Hill, I hope you do now. And to celebrate having a 24-hour restaurant in the neighborhood (Are you aware of any others? Seriously. Are you? I’d like to know.), you should all go to their Free Pancake Day this (upcoming) Tuesday (2/23) from 7AM to 10PM. It’s part of their fundraising efforts for the Children’s Miracle Network so you should expect to drop a couple dollars in the pot before you leave. You should also probably plan on waiting a while for a table if you go in any large group. But you know it’s worth it.

QUICK UPDATE BEFORE I POST: I just noticed that this CHS Blog has already defined the area mentioned above to be the Union Triangle. I’m glad to see that I’m not stepping on any toes that haven’t already been stepped on by claiming that the area belongs to us.

The Wikipedia article on Capitol Hill does not provide a source for the boundaries it describes, so it can’t be considered authoritative. (In fact there are only five footnotes in the entire article, much of which reads like a Chamber of Commerce brochure.) The Union Triangle is far too small to be a “neighborhood” unto itself. I’ve always thought of Capitol Hill as comprising everything north of Madison (up to Interlaken) and east of I-5 (to 23/24). IHOP is on the north side of Madison, so as far as I’m concerned it’s in Capitol Hill. The Stranger Guide to Seattle (Sasquatch Books, 2001, p. 85) also places it there.

The IHOP is technically and physically in First Hill according to the city clerk with its mailing address on Madison. And none of us should really be eating there unless its for a good cause.( http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/~public/nmaps/html/NN-1240L.ht)

The City’s Union Triangle is also determined with these charts to be entirely within First Hill, a larger Pike Triangle would technically be split between FH and CH. Oh, will it take a $50M streetcar for these walls to be torn down?

These are pretty interesting maps, considering the amount of merging that is between the two Hills, I imagine they are drawn up based on voting precincts or something of the like?
