At the beginning of the year, Donna Moodie announced that she would reopen Marjorie at 1412 East Union, situated on a quiet block between Capitol Hill and the Central District. We visited with Donna at Marjorie and witnessed the build out at a stage just before walls would be installed. Donna remarked that when the walls came in, the space would begin to look like a restaurant.
Donna chose this particular space for a few reasons. Having searched for older buildings with character, she found landlords reluctant to make necessary upgrades. In addition, many were offering shorter-term leases (five years or less). Having suffered disappointment at losing her lease in Belltown in 2008, Donna did not want to face such uncertainty in the new space. Finally, Capitol Hill Housing and the Chloe worked to attract Donna to the Madison-area space, as she is a figure associated with much goodwill in Seattle. In fact, Donna now serves on the Capitol Hill Housing Foundation Board. Donna’s connection to the Central District goes even further back. She has previously been the Chair and now serves on the Board of the Central District Forum. In fact, she was preparing to take part in the Food as Art annual fundraiser for the CD Forum when we spoke.
The 40 seat Marjorie in Capitol Hill will continue offering small plates, a trend that they pioneered in Belltown. Donna will be able to extend the dining space, by opening the garage door and accessing the pretty patio outside. When asked whether she wanted to share anything with our readers, she shared that her son Max was really enjoying the neighborhood: getting sandwiches at Cafe Presse and drinks at Stumptown.
Marjorie will be open in early May.
I was so sad when Marjorie closed in Belltown. The food and atmosphere were excellent. I do hope that there are more vegetarian items on her new menu, as I would have gone there a lot more often if I’d had a few more options.
We just assume now that if there is a post about a restaurant there will be vegetarian whining. No need for the post. We’ve heard it already. And again. And again.
This is great news for the hill and great for the neighborhood at large. It’s always a good sign when a business person gets involved with the community!
So, any update on the expected open date for Marjorie?
Early May is what I was told (just added to the post)
Marjorie will be a great asset to the community, as will Donna! This is such great news for the corner of 14th and Union and for the growing 12th Ave Business District. While a little bit east of 12th, this represents yet one more business that thought this neighborhood was the place to be! Welcome Donna!
