Cops chase down rape suspect in front of Capitol Hill library — UPDATE

Seattle Police pursued a man through the alleys and streets between Summit and Harvard Ave this afternoon before the multiple officers in pursuit on foot and in cruisers finally chased him down in front of the Capitol Hill library branch, according to SPD radio transmissions. The suspect was booked on investigation of rape and had warrants for at least two other charges including DUI and theft, according to the King County Jail register.

We have no information on the attack the man was suspected in but will follow up with SPD as soon as possible to learn more. We know that police were looking for the man throughout the morning and he was believed to be carrying a knife.

The chase started in an alley near E Harrison and Summit around 1:30 PM when an officer reported that the suspect had run away from him. The chase lasted about 14 minutes before officers were able to take the man into custody three blocks away on Harvard.

UPDATE 6/14/2010 9:18 AM: Details are still murky on the assault that lead to this pursuit and arrest. An SPD spokesperson tells us that officers were called to Harborview early Sunday morning to meet with two women who told hospital staff that they had been robbed and sexually assaulted by the man Saturday night. At this time, SPD is not able to provide further details or information on where the attack occurred. The arrested man remains behind bars inside King County Jail.
