Happy Father’s Day: What did your dad teach you, Capitol Hill?

Father and Daughter.
, originally uploaded by chelseatatum.

This one is for all the daddies, poppas and father figures of Capitol Hill. What did your dad teach you? My favorite lesson learned from jseattle Sr. is how to tie a good-enough fishing knot. Wrap six times. Pass it through. Pull it tight.

My father told me to shave. Every. Morning.

He taught me to drive, great driver, good teacher.
To be honest and to never cheat anyone.
To treat my mom and sister with total respect, always.
My international view comes from him. So does my ability to swear.
He was a good cook and did a giant great garden. Loved animals.
He worked very hard, but we had a great family two week vacation, say Yellowstone and all points in the West.
To fear nothing – and seek authentic people.
To fight racism and injustice of any sort.

He died at home when I was 28, of cancer. My mom held him close his last hours. I had said goodbye the day before. I miss him every day.

My dad is a cabinet maker, and taught me how to fix a loose cabinet hinge. Fill it with toothpicks and Elmer’s glue. Toothpicks are made of maple which is a very strong wood.

He also taught me those thumb tricks… the one where you stretch your thumb, and the one that looks like your thumb comes off.

He also taught me to be two-faced… you are polite to people, but you say how you really feel when they’re not around.

My dad taught me that being gentle is the hardest thing a man can ever do.

As we think about the Dads out there, ours and all the rest, need to say BEST WISHES … it is not an easy task to raise a family, to be a Dad all those years … kids demand all from their parents, all.

If you know a Dad , call and say hello …. and yeah, get him some Old Spice shaving foam, cologne, or new socks, or a tie!!!(something for the car)

Hey, that’s my picture. Cool. Anyway, my dad taught me that you have to work hard for what you want and when something good is on sale at the grocery store, buy lots of it.
