Northwest School runner takes first in Dream Mile race

One of the fastest high school runners in the nation attends class on Summit Ave. The Northwest School’s Maddie Meyers won the Jim Ryun Dream Mile in NYC on Saturday:

At first it looked like Cory McGee was headed for another big victory in the Big Apple. Then Shelby Hayes appeared to have stolen the race from her. But then out of nowhere came Maddie Meyers.

Meyers, a sophomore from The Northwest School in Seattle, Washington, sent shock waves through Icahn Stadium when she used a punishing kick to come from way back to run down Hayes with about 30 yards left to win the inaugural Jim Ryun Dream Mile in heart-stopping fashion on Randall’s Island

The invitation only race is a prestigious opportunity for the nation’s best runners to go head to head. Meyers clocked in at 4:41.93 in her 1-mile win, good for 20th all-time, according to ESPN.

With her sophomore year winding down, there are still plenty of opportunities for Meyers to move up that top-20 ladder. But, for now, it’s time for summer. Northwest’s last day of school is Wednesday.

We recently reported on the Northwest School’s $2.3 million acquisition of an E Pine parking lot for a planned office space and gymnasium construction project.
