Broadway down to one QFC this week: What’s your surival plan? – UPDATE

Word from Kroger Co. world headquarters in Ohio (and anybody who has shopped there in recent days and seen the signs): Starting Tuesday night through Thursday morning, the Harvard Market QFC (that’s the Broadway/Pike one) will be closed while they put the finishing touches on their re-model. Details on the flyer graphic provided to us, below, including info on the shuttle bus they’ll have in place for you valued customers to get a ride to the Broadway Market QFC. But you’ll have to walk if you’d rather shop 15th Ave.

The Harvard store has been going through an overhaul for weeks now. We’re told by a company spokesperson that work to “condenser units” will take place during this week’s closure. We’ve asked for more details on all the changes and will update when we hear more. In the meantime, feel free to suggest any other upgrades you’d like to see at the Harvard QFC. CHS hopes they don’t eliminate the token-powered bathroom doors. We’ve got quite a few saved up.

UPDATE:
A company spokesperson provided this roster of changes underway at the Harvard Market QFC.

The remodel of our Harvard Market QFC began about 6 weeks ago. This remodel is to make some upgrades to the store and to replace some aging equipment. The reason for the temporary closure, Tues, 9pm through Thurs, 9am, is to replace the refrigeration condenser unit.

Some of the enhancements or equipment upgrades include:

* Burrito Bar in Deli (this will be our first burrito bar for QFC).

* Hot Bistro in Deli

* Hearth Fire Pizza Oven – Pizzas will be make fresh, in-store and then baked in our hearth fire pizza oven and sold in our Bistro

* Expanded Produce Department (new types of cases to allow more product variety)

* 6 New Quick Check Lanes. These allow customers to que in a fashion to move to the next available checkout, rather than being committed to a particular line. There is a screen above that will indicate which lane is now available. This should improve speed of checkout for our customers.

* New dairy cases which also improve energy efficiency.

* Updated Bakery

* New Gelato Station

* Refresh/Updated Cases in Meat and Seafood

* New customer restrooms

* New floor (replacing tile floor with stained concrete floor)

* Expanded Gourmet Cheese

* Improved lighting in our underground parking garage

* Expanded use of LED lighting and improved energy efficiency throughout the store

OK, i totally get having a shuttle for the elderly and/or disabled or otherwise non-able bodied, but i seriously hope most people will just walk the 10 minutes across the street to the broadway QFC. i always thought it was kind of silly to have two of them so close together personally.

and even though the 15th ave QFC is closer to my house, it’s so tiny and doesn’t have nearly the same selection as the broadway one!

Sunday afternoons, there’s a Farmer’s Market right near there. So skip the QFC frankenfood and grab something from your local farmers! ;-)

Can’t wait for Sunday? Three words – Pike Place Market. A nice walk, and a great selection of real food.

I imagine this is more to detract people from going right up Madison to Trader Joe’s.

Why did Kroger think that taking out floor tile which looked decent when they maintained it would look better with brown polished concrete? All that see through floor does is let us take a look at the cracked and unattractive floor beneath it. Is it Kroger’s intent now to remodel stores every couple of years now? On a positive note it’s not the Broadway Market QFC on three levels requiring you to get in an elevator if you have a cart and can’t find what you want on the level you find yourself.

Umm, it’s kind of a long walk when you’re carrying groceries – the two QFCs are about a half mile from one another. It’s a mile from where I live to the Broadway Market QFC, while it’s only a few blocks to the Harvard Market QFC. Big difference on foot with heavy bags.

Seriously. And if you’re like me, add on to those bags a 2 year old child. Plus the less crackheads I have to walk through, the better.

Please, shut up.

I dunno, I carry 2 heavy paper bags full of groceries uphill home to east cap hill from QFC on broadway all the time (it’s about a mile). I’m not saying it’s easy or physically do-able for everyone, I just think people underestimate themselves or opt to jump in a car/van too quickly. there’s also biking?

If you have kids in-tow with you, that’s entirely different (and I don’t want to imagine the additional slew of issues and difficulties that brings along with it).
