George the outdoor cat

george the outdoor cat – RIP

Earlier this week, after reading the sad news in the Slog, we said goodbye to George, the king cat of Broadway. The picture we ran on that post caught the cat’s essence — rays of sunlight, asleep on the warm hood of a taxi cab parked on Broadway. But for anybody who never saw George in person or never got a real good look at him, we thought it might be nice to share this excellent picture of the urban creature submitted to the CHS flickr pool by mik.nei. Here’s what mik.nei writes about George:

george the outdoor cat – RIP

for many years, george was well-known on broadway. his tag read ‘george the outdoor cat’, to dissuade well-wishers from calling animal control. he was loved, he will be missed. diabetes took him away.

but in the end, fifteen years of defiantly walking through traffic makes for a pretty good run.

George’s pluck and luck might not be as memorable in the long run as his outdoor-ness. It seems given the changes in the density of the neighborhood and people’s feelings about allowing cats to roam, George might have been one of the last of his kind. But that might just be hogwash. There are some things that never really change. You’d have to think a cool cat who knows his way around a city street might make that list.

Mik – Thanks for writing that up. This comes as a sad shock as I spent many a morning enjoying George outside Vivace waiting for Jim to open up the Hair Connection, where he spent his days lolling around the shop. He had his habits, Lisa at Vivace giving him his daily bowl of milk. He was also a FB phenom. Loved that guy.
