CHS Pics: Park(ing) Day winners, demolition update, jazz memorial, Pearl party

Wrapping up the weekend with some images from the Hill and it’s schizophrenic weather. Above, the friendly bee woman of East Pike’s Magic Garden pocket park accepts her prize for the park with best costumes in Park(ing) Day 2010. More pictures of Friday’s Park(ing) Day and the rest of the weekdn from CHS — and others — below.

Council member Tom Rasmussen hands out the grand prize to a rep from Olson Kundig

The winners from Olson Kundig Architects described their Pioneer Square park here:

My offices Park(ing) Day park. We took over three parking spaces, covered them with 500sqft of sod, installed benches made of reclaimed 2×4 firewall, provided umbrellas, and offered sketches of anything any passer by requested. The sketch requests were phoned up to our 6th floor office. When the sketch was complete it was zip lined down to the park where it would crash into a symbol to let the park attendant know it had arrived.

Have to respect that the winner carried his trophy — a converted parking meter — out for a night on the town along with, we presume, the prize of $200 in quarters.

Meanwhile, in more sober news, thanks to Robert Guttman for sharing this image from the tribute to Hadley Caliman on Saturday.

Outside on Saturday, the Pearl Apartments Block Party drew a mix of residents and passersby to check out DJs and the beer and wine garden benefiting Three Dollar Bill Cinema.

We also stopped by Belmont Ave to check out how the demolition of the troubled house at 502 Belmont had progressed. The structure is completely gone now but a pit and lots of trash and debris remains. With gear still at the site, expect to see work continue to finish clearing the lot. What happens after that is the real question. We’ll see what we can find out.

It is very prosaic – a vacant lot till eternity – now taxed as a vacant lot – or – a building permit is obtained and a building is erected in accord with current zoning at permit issue.

Is there mystery? The whole process is in the control of the owner of the property. If he mows the weeds it need not be fenced. Great place for dogs to poop and cats too …. neighborhood asset.

The site has better potential now that it is vacant. And vacant lots in city are hard to find.

Predict – new building in 18 months!!! I bet. (I forgot, some of the neighbors will NOT like the look of the new building!!)
