Hill food and drink notes: New Cap Hill street food player, restaurant week, La Bête porn

  • Talk about a nightlife initiative, there’s a new player in the Capitol Hill late night street chow game. Mobatta Crepes has started setting up on select weekend nights next to the Comet hot dog stand on 10th Ave between Pike and Pine. Owner Andrew Klein tells CHS they served a full assortment of crepes this weekend, braved the rain and “changed people’s lives” with their delicious crepes. Klein says he’s looking for a “permanent” location on the Hill for his crepe set-up.
  • You might remember we also reported that Boom Noodle has a plan to bring crepes to the ‘hood via its Tokyo Sweets brand. That construction permit was issued but we’re hearing there are hold-ups on the business end of things.

  • We admit it. We’re meh on restaurant weeks and “25 for $25” or “30 for $30” type promotions. Like Groupon and other group buying promotions, if miss-managed, the crowds drawn by the deals piss off customers and leave staff grumpy. But it’s time for Seattle Restaurant Week, again, and there are 10 perfectly good Capitol Hill participants  this year. Over on First Hill, it’s also a fine way to visit the Hunt Club if you’re looking to save a buck.
  • So, with news that Sirs Cherry Jam eyed and ultimately got beat out on the former Martin’s off Madison space, please let speculation begin on who the victorious new tenant is. Guesses?
  • Meanwhile, the good people behind Quinn’s are getting into the burger business in Fremont. One imagines one will eat one very excellent burger here on the Hill when Skillet Diner  opens in the Chloe.
  • Signs of life at the soon-to-be Easy Joe’s in the old 10th Ave East Tidbit space but no word on opening date yet. We have mail out.
  • Also some activity in the Packard Building as management of incoming Italian bar and cafe Varro says construction of their space starts this week. Assume that means Montreal bagel shop Eltana is soon to take shape next door, too.
  • Seattle Met reminds that an intriguing new restaurant is coming to Madison Park.
  • From the reviews bucket, is 15th Ave Coffee & Tea a Starbucks conference room? Meanwhile, this Yelper is either the most useful dining companion in the world or the most irritating. You decide! On Sitka and Spruce:

Third, the wine list is almost exclusively European (there was one American red wine) and is exclusively populated by very obscure wines. This may be a plus to some, I guess, but in general with the Euro at $1.39 and Chinese demand spiking Bordeaux prices, I think French wines have become a poor value and I would always like to have a Washington or Napa alternative.

  • Wednesday is the deadline for public comments to be submitted to the city regarding Volunteer Park Cafe’s change of use application to allow the restaurant to continue operating at its 17th and Galer location.
  • Food porn thanks to Hill shutterbug pouryourheartintoit’s submissions to the CHS flickr pool from a recent “hip hop brunch” at La Bête:
