CHS Pics: A year at Belmont and Republican from 'biohazard' to empty lot to what's next

The story of 502 Belmont Ave East didn't end with the demolition of the 'biohazard' house in September. A Capitol Hill photographer who used to live across the street started documenting the property a year ago. Andrew Nedimyer shared those pictures with CHS -- and promises he'll be there to continue photographing the location now that the house and garage has been torn down and the empty lot waits for what's next.

Landowner Kyle Clark owns the three lots along Belmont at the corner of East Republican. More than four years ago, he filed paperwork with the city to explore demolishing the houses on those lots and building a 6-story, 42-unit multifamily development. That project never got off the ground. We're not sure what comes next. But neighbor Andrew, who now lives up near Cal Anderson, says he'll be there to take the pictures.

It's great that the ugly biohazard is now gone, but I sure hope that lot doesn't stay as is indefinitely, because it's still an eyesore. Didn't the City take control of the property (by condemning it) prior to demolition? Or does Mr.Clark still own it? For years, he proved his irresponsibility by leaving the dwelling in an advanced state of disrepair, so I am not optimistic that he will move ahead and do a nice-looking redevelopment....especially in this economy. I'd be glad to be proven wrong.
