Hill’s new maker business Scenic Drive Factory is creative + attractive. On a bike.

The next stage in maker culture on Capitol Hill will be hip, stylish and, yes, sexy. Wow, that geek phase sure went fast. This Thursday, the Scenic Drive East Pike Factory joins a growing group of creative businesses around Capitol Hill (and First Hill, too!) that both create and provide community and resources to help others create, too. Here’s more on Scenic Drive from an e-mail sent to CHS by Nikki Mazzei.

Scenic Drive is a cycling paraphernalia design collaboration between Nikki Mazzei + Rachel Ravitch, who met as members of the Seattle bike dance performance group the Bicycle Belles. Inspired by Seattle’s urban cycling culture and the love of finding second-hand materials, Scenic Drive’s goods are all remade from salvaged parts.

At the Scenic Drive E. Pike Factory, Mazzei + Ravitch hope to create a community hub that encourages cycling and creativity alike. Drop in Thursday through Sunday, 11am to 7pm to rent a sewing machine by the hour (or by appointment). Attend vibrant evening and weekend workshops hosted by local artists and designers. Take part in art openings, community bike rides, and performance art. Come enjoy our inviting creative space located at 611 E. Pike St., Seattle, WA 98122…opening soon! Visit us on the web at scenicdrivefactory.com and become our friend on facebook (Scenic Drive Factory) for updates!

Metrix Create:Space was the first of the for-profit maker spaces to leap out of the DIY hobby space and try to make a go of creating a business. The CHS advertiser opened in October 2009 and celebrates its 1-year anniversary with a party this Friday, by the way. Jigsaw Renaissance offers another more earthy, less laser-y maker environment over on Madison.

But none of the creative geekery is that far removed from some of the other private enterprise creativity Capitol Hill is so well known for. Do-it-yourself is part of connoisseur culture. The new maker businesses aren’t that different from the coffee shops that taught us to buy french presses and fancy beans.

Scenic Drive will have all that going for it. And bikes.

Forget all the complaining about the bikers, sharrows, and green monsters. I’m all about bike love!
