This guy has big city attitude. We like him. In an incident reported to police last Wednesday, October 13, a Belmont Ave apartment dweller told SPD he was sitting in his living room with his lights off around 7:30 PM. He said he was on his computer — surfing CHS, perhaps? — when he saw a man approach his front door with a crowbar who then apparently tried to pry the door open. When the man with the crowbar saw the resident inside the apartment, he fled the scene, according to the report. The resident then waited until after 10 PM to call police about the attempted break-in. The officer making the report found pry marks and the door and asked the resident why had not called 911 sooner. He told the police officer he didn’t call immediately because he assumed this was “a common occurrence in the city.” The officers report notes that he told the resident to “call right away if this was to happen again.”
The SPD has what seems like a policy of not showing up to break-ins unless there’s a perpetrator on the scene. In my recent experience, they referred me to an online file-a-report site.
but the perpetrator WAS at the scene. as soon as this guy saw someone with a crowbar at his door he should have picked up the phone and called 911.
doesn’t sound like big city attitude to me; more like stupidity.
that minor drug infractions are officially low priority for SPD
If you’ve got no suspect information and need a report more for insurance purposes than anything, that’s fairly normal for most police agencies, and not just around here (some do phone reports instead of online, but it’s effectively the same thing). Locally, you’d find that Kent, Renton, Federal Way, Des Moines and Auburn all do the same thing.
A bizarre report. Why bother calling 911 at all, if you’re going to wait a couple of hours? Also, who’s the guy with the likable big city attitude? The burglar? The dweller? I can’t see much ‘likable’ about either one.
Agreed. This guy’s an idiot and should have called right away, rather than accepting this as normal behavior that we should all just let slide. Or as others have said, not bothered to call at all unless he’s the owner/manager making a report for insurance.
Both times our home (east Capitol Hill/Montlake) has been broken into the police have come out. Unfortunately it didn’t result in them finding the burglars, but they were very responsive.
Agreed.
There’s gotta be more to this story. Maybe he was waiting for the bong aroma to dissipate?
If the next victim gets assaulted in the break-in, their blood will be on this nitwits head. It’s the same logic used when Seattle drivers don’t use turn signals.People forget it’s not about them, it’s for the rest of us.
