No lights at Bobby Morris playfield

Depending on if a game is scheduled, it’s not unusual to see Bobby Morris playfield dark but we’re telling you, the power is out. We swear. An electrical problem has knocked out the lighting at Bobby Morris Playfield forcing the cancellation of games at the sports field adjacent to Cal Anderson Park though the weekend, Seattle Parks said via a Tuesday afternoon Tweet.

Lights for the nearby sports courts are still operational, it appears, allowing the soon-to-be legitimized dodgeball players to do battle.

By the way, anybody ever play soccer on Bobby Morris during the Kentucky Fried Chicken days? Smart strategy was to not have to defend the KFC side in the second half or risk battling grumbling tummies after smelling that wafting deep-fried deliciousness.

UPDATE: Via Facebook, we learn of bravery in the face of adversity.

U-9 Supergirls practiced through the dark!!!!

Adrianne tells us, proudly. Well played, U-9 Supergirls. Well played.

Used to play high school soccer there (it was our home field), back when it was hard-packed red dirt/clay. The ball travelled fast, and you worked your ass off (at least, at halfback, I sure did). The KFC-factor was, without a doubt, an unfair distraction. The visiting teams didn’t really care for our field surface, either. It was especially unforgiving during falls – like running and sliding into home on humanscaled sandpaper. ;)

ha! i also played tons of games here as a kid, soccer and baseball. The surface back then was called cintrex (crushed bits of brick) and we had to slide in it. F*cking horrible. Whose genius idea was that? To this day, I still can’t smell KFC without thinking of playing little league outfield in the rain. Sometimes our coaches bought us french fries after practice.

Also, my first “real” job was at that KFC when I was 17. I now pay homage by eating lots and lots of Rancho Bravo.

I’m dumb and thus easily confused by change. Glad that it’s just a problem not a regular park cost saving measure.
