Seattle Central hosting East Precinct brass for forum, Q&A — UPDATE: SPD LGBT forum Tuesday

As the rally point for many protests including the annual October 22nd march against police violence, Seattle Central’s campus plays an important part in the city’s anti-authority culture. The campus will bring the authorities together with the community Wednesday night in what should be an interesting discussion including representatives from the East Precinct, students and community members. Capitol Hill area residents are invited to attend. Details, below.


Seattle Central and Seattle Police to Hold Community Forum

WHAT:A community forum including leadership from the Seattle Police Department (East Precinct) and the Seattle Central Community College campus community. Topics to be discussed include student rights, police training and accountability, and campus safety. A one-hour discussion between students and SPD officers will be followed by a one-hour question and answer session with the audience.

WHEN:Wednesday, December 1 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
WHERE:Broadway Performance Hall, 1625 Broadway.
BACKGROUND: Seattle Central President Paul Killpatrick invited the Seattle Police Department to hold a community forum on the Central campus to establish an ongoing discussion between the SPD East Precinct and Seattle Central. Student leaders helped plan the forum, along with East Precinct officers. This event is free; Capitol Hill residents are invited to attend, along with the Seattle Central community

UPDATE:
SPD will also be involved in a public forum on the Hill Tuesday night to discuss LGBT crime issues and service with the police and fire departments. The big guys are coming out for this one: Chief Diaz and Chief Dean will be part of the talk:

Seattle, WA – Seattle PFLAG is proud to announce Seattle Police Chief John Diaz and Fire Chief Gregory Dean will discuss safety issues with members of the Gay and Lesbian community on Tuesday November 30th from 7pm – 9pm in the Broadway Room at the Silver Cloud Hotel (1100 Broadway Seattle, WA) as part of the “Seattle PFLAG Presents” public forum series. The discussion will be moderated by TVW’s “Author’s Hour” host Terry Tazioli.
 
Chief Diaz and Dean will be joined by gay and lesbian officers from the Police and Fire Department to discuss public safety, the persistence of hate crimes and bullying, and how Public Safety Departments have instituted tolerance campaigns to strengthen their organizations and become places where gays and lesbians can serve with honor. This forum is open to the public and Seattle PFLAG encourages you to bring your pressing concerns and opinions. This is your chance to speak. This is your chance to be heard.
 
Seattle “PFLAG Presents” is a forum designed to spotlight LGBT issues and perspectives with the broader goal of increasing awareness and strengthening community bonds. Through this forum the non-profit organization provides opportunity for newsmakers, community leaders, and concerned citizens to interact and speak openly about LGBT rights and issues.
 
PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgender persons) promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons, their families and friends through: (1) support to cope with an adverse society; (2) education to enlighten an ill-informed public; (3) advocacy to end discrimination and secure equal civil rights.
