CHS Pics: Things you find in Capitol Hill dumpsters #1

1400 East Pike’s American Artificial Limb Company has long been on the CHS list of things we need to check into. Is it for real or some kind of true speakeasy? A front for a FBI operation to infiltrate the neighborhood? If it’s phony, Chat Noir’s photos recently submitted to the CHS Flickr pool show the perpetrators are putting extra work to make the place look authentic.

AALC also has a Web site that describes the business thusly:

Our goal is to provide you with the highest quality service that meets your individual needs. This service to you is provided in concert with your physician and in cooperative spirit with the rest of the rehabilitation team. We strive to understand your individual needs so that we can provide a service which is educational, caring, and motivating. Treatments are performed in a positive, supportive, and comfortable atmosphere.

Site also says they’ve been in the artificial limb business since 1971. We’re now doubly intrigued. Moving AALC to the top of our ‘check into’ list.

My friends and I have always wondered what the heck goes on in there…same with that vacuum repair place. Who gets their vacuum repaired there? Seriously! Both clearly fronts for some kind of mob operations, right?? We think so…

Yeah, the artificial limb company is a real business. They probably won’t appreciate the speakeasy, FBI, mob operations speculation. Is it really that crazy to think that a prosthetic limb business exists?

I think its understood that its a club/bar type thing. Been there once. Its kind of annoying since they only take cash. The guy at the door said it was his place, the police dont know about it and to have a good time. Being so close to the police station I feel it has to just be a fake scenario.

I believe you’re talking about the electric teagarden.

Yes, I agree. Like, people need artificial limbs, someone must sell them…it’s not *that* bizarre. But I do always want to steal their awning, I just love it.

I’ve met the owner of the Artificial Limb Co. and its a legitimate business. However, there is also an underground after hours club/bar upstairs. I have also spoken to a friend in the SPD and the police DO know about the bar upstairs and watch it regularly. There is apparently some “fire hazards” and non-sanctioned liquor sales, but its a good time. I believe its called the “electric tea garden”. They usually charge a hefty cover and require a membership. I’m not sure if the Limb Company and the bar are actually in business together or not…. Let me know!

Sort of. The business upstairs (the Electric Tea Garden)is not underground. Literally and figuratively. Unless, by underground you mean they cater to an “underground” crowd and even that is a stretch. The place serves coffee and has had huge record(vinyl)sales and has shows on some weekends. I’ve been there for some friends’ performances and I definitely don’t have membership and have never needed it to go inside. The most I ever paid in cover for a show was $7.

I work at an insurance company and I’ve seen payments go out to this place (pretty sure it’s legit)

I just got a brace for my leg there. It’s legit. 80’s decor, but legit.
