Broadway’s Kanapé celebrates grand opening weekend

A canapé is a decorative finger food, basically a small piece of bread with an elegantly prepared topping and garnish. They are the centerpiece of the menu at Café Kanapé, which is having its grand opening this weekend at Broadway and Roy.

“I missed home,” said Kanapé founder Sabine Ruthensteiner at a press preview Thursday. She is from Latvia and wanted to bring “A taste of Riga” to Seattle. After ten years as owner of downtown club Contour, she decided to open the restaurant in a location with a “neighborhood feel.” Kanapé is in the FedEx building in the space formerly occupied by Bella Pizza and Pasta.

Aside from the canapés ($2.50-3 each), Kanapé also has salads ($4-6), savory crepes ($5-9) and sweet crepes ($5-8). And, of course, they have wine, beer and cocktails. If you are going for a meal (as opposed to snacks and drinks), three or four canapés and a salad would be a good amount of food (and lets be honest, you’ll probably get a sweet crepe, too).

They have a happy hour Monday-Friday from 4-6. $4 wine, $3 draft pilsner, $3.50 wells.

Hours:

Monday-Thursday: Noon-11 p.m.
Friday-Saturday: Noon-2 a.m.
Sunday: Noon-9 p.m.

Just had some dessert crêpes and wine at Kanapé. Great food and great service. The biggest hurdle they face is ambiance. The blinding light from the 76 station across the street is enough to keep me away. It feels like you are dining on the side of the road. They need curtains.

You don’t need to be fancy to be successful—think old Sitka & Spruce—but you can’t ignore ambiance. It’s not there just yet. I really hope they succeed though, and I’ll come back either way. The food is great. But that’s got to be a really tough spot. Maybe one of the toughest spots on Broadway, er, 10th.

Anyway, good luck to Kanapé. I’ll be back.

My wife and I went and really liked the food and the service was excellent. But I agree that they need to somehow block off the view of the gas station across the street. We will go back too
