CHS Febrrrruary Thursday update: Cold but no Capitol Hill snow day

2:45 AM – Thursday: Snow is falling lightly on Capitol Hill after an initial burst prior to midnight. For a time, it appeared our neighborhood might finally be on course to match areas to the north and to the south where snowfall from the ‘canceled’ winter storm has been much heavier. A bulletin from SDOT reported, for example, that the streets south of I-90 had accumulated more than 3 inches.

Capitol Hill, on the other hand, is only now starting to accumulate snow and even that is not currently terribly impressive. As one of our CHS friends on Facebook noted, “I’ve never been so disappointed in snow.”

All main Capitol Hill routes remain clear after having been chemically de-iced on Wednesday but sidestreets are starting to turn white especially on higher points on the Hill. If you have a report from your particular sidestreet of the world, let us know.

Though the National Weather Service has canceled its winter storm warning for the region and Seattle, its latest forecast says current conditions should continue through morning. For kids home from school this week for winter break, this *might* mean you’ll be able to have some fun in Volunteer Park and Cal Anderson.

With forecast temperatures expected to be in the mid-30s and snow still coming down as of this post, travels across and off the Hill this Thursday morning will be hobbled. For anybody traveling the freeways, WSDOT has been reporting spinouts and trouble spots at many spots south, north and east of the city. Leave extra time and, if you can, telecommute.

No word, yet, on snow routes for Metro for the Hill and central Seattle core. The status map as of this posting shows Central Seattle on standard routing.
