Capitol Hill food + drink notes: Chungee’s turns 1, Ba Bar, Capitol Club’s $1.1 million price tag

You’ve been waiting all day for this. Dig in. More to share? [email protected]

  • Happy 1-year birthday to 12th Ave’s Chungee’s. They’re celebrating this weekend with the return of the Lion Dance:

Please Join us at Chungee’s Drink and Eat for our 1 year anniversary party! We’ll have our 2nd annual Lion Dance preforming at 3:00pm on Sunday February 13th to ring in the NEW YEAR (Year of the Rabbit) and celebrate our first year in business!

We had a great crowd last year and hope to have even more this year! There will be taste treats and plenty of merriment so come join us! Thanks, from all of us at Chungee’s!!!

CHS has just recently recovered most of our hearing lost during the 2010 Lion Dance firecrackers. Congratulations Chungee’s. And, by the way, Chungee’s is a CHS advertiser.

  • Last week’s roster of openings etc. to look forward to on the Hill in 2011 left out the debut of Marination Mobile’s permanent home in the Harvard Market slated for April.
  • And, holy smokes, we forgot one more. Varro is on pace to open at 12th and Pine next to Eltana Bagels in about two months: “We were just about to announce via Twitter etc. After some delays with the city and some contractor scheduling issues Varro is scheduled to begin interviewing staff shortly with an open within 6 to 8 weeks max. That comes from our owner, Glenn Walker.” We profiled some of the plans for Varro here.
  • Maharaja’s replacement is already up and running. We note that Pho Le is now open for your noodle soup needs on East Pike near Broadway.
  • Eric Banh has a name for his coming-soon noodle shop planned for 12th Ave down Seattle U way in the former home of Watertown. He’s calling it Ba Bar:

after many hours of names gathering such as fruits, proteins, vegetables, city, seasons… we decide to go with Ba Bar. “Ba” means father in vietnamese. This is the dedication to my late father who passed away a year and half ago. His passion or obsession for food was an enormous influence on both my sister, Sophie and me.

Banh’s Monsoon and Baguette Box are also CHS advertisers.

  • Melrose Market butcher Rain Shadow Meats found itself in the middle of a social media flap this weekend over rumors that meat delivery service Thundering Hooves was going out of business. This social media foodie said she’d heard from Rain Shadow that Thundering was shutting down. This social media foodie said she called Thundering and that they said they were dismayed at the rumors and not going out of business.
  • Yet another item from a CHS advertiser! Po Dog has $5 dogs all month.
  • Not a CHS advertiser! Victrola took home an award at the recent Northwest Regional Barista Competition scoring a hard-earned second place in the legendary Brewer’s Cup battle. Portland’s Coava Coffee was the tamp champ.
  • Highline is hosting a big Rawk Paper Scissors party on February 25th if you’re planning ahead.
  • Cupcake Royale Capitol Hill is hosting something called a “naked cupcake party:”

Tuesday, Feb. 8 from 2-4pm: DIY Valentine Cupcake Sprinkle Party. Buy a naked cupcake for $3 and step up to the DIY Valentine Sprinkle Zone, frost it up with special sprinkles and give it to someone you love. Includes a sweet Valentine Card. Cupcake Royale Capitol Hill, 1111 E Pike St.

  • We’ve noted Capitol Hill businesses for sale before but don’t recall ever posting about the building and the business being for sale. For $1.1 million you can have the Capitol Club’s building at 414 East Pine. Listing notes you can buy the Capitol Club, too, if you want.
  • Slog’s Bethany Jean Clement follows up on our report that super ginormous coffee company Starbucks decided to punt on the “independent” 15th Ave Coffee & Tea concept by letting us know that the change did, in fact, occur. Thank you, BJC. By the way, have you tried their Via instant coffee? Maybe this is my father talking, but that stuff does the trick at 5 in the morning when certain people have let it be known they would rather not hear me grind coffee beans. Thanks Starbucks!
