Man beaten for iPhone near Cal Anderson Park in early Wednesday robbery

A man suffered several cuts and bruises to his head and face in a brutal beating and robbery early Wednesday morning on 11th Ave E near Cal Anderson Park.

According to the SPD report on the incident, the victim told police he was walking home from work northbound on 11th Ave E around 2:30 AM Wednesday when a male started to follow and “walk in step” with him. The victim said he turned and confronted the suspect, telling him to stop following him. The victim said the suspect then became irate and began to punch the victim in the face and drag him while taking his iPhone from his back pocket.

The victim said he tried to fight back but gave up and went back to work where co-workers drove him to Harborview due to the extent of his injuries. The victim said the hospital found nothing broken and no serious injuries.

When the victim arrived at East Precinct around 5:30 AM Wednesday morning to report the crime, the officer who took the report on the incident noted “several cuts and bruises on his head and face as well as dried blood all over his nose. The area around his left eye was very swelled and purple.”

The suspect described his attacker as a black male in his 20s, with baggy black clothing, a skinny build and “nappy” hair. The victim said it was possible the suspect had fled into Cal Anderson. A search of the area three hours after the incident did not turn up the suspect.
