Reported homeless encampment fire smokes up Pine I-5 overpass — UPDATE

Seattle Fire responded to a smoky fire beneath the Pine Street I-5 overpass Wednesday morning. An eyewitness tells us a mattress had been set ablaze (UPDATE: SFD says fire may have been a homeless person’s bedding, not a mattress. No information on injuries). We also received these pictures from Sage who called 911, snapped the photos and then, like every good CHS reader should do, sent us a note about the incident!

I called it [in] at 9:12 am, right after I saw the smoke and flames. I don’t know how it started, but the fire was clearly localized at the encampment under the bridge.

I would have missed it had I not stopped to appreciate the tulips and daffodils that are in bloom adjacent to the dog park on the other side of the street.

Thanks Sage. And thanks for remembering the proper order of things: Call 911, photograph, then e-mail CHS.

The overpass areas below along I-5 are used by homeless people — CHS has reported on SPD activities involving searches for people who may have fled under the fenced-off spaces beneath the roadway. We don’t have details yet from SFD confirming the mattress element — but our main concern is whether anybody was hurt in the smoky fire — and whether they stuck around for treatment if they were. We’ll update if we learn more.

I don’t know who Patrick is, but yeah, I was just enjoying those tulips yesterday walking home from work. Very nice!

Patrick is also an awesome steward! The park always looks great because of his hard work.

My husband was down there with our dog around the time the FD showed up for the fire, but it sounded relatively uneventful.

These homeless camps on public property are nothing but trouble…lots of litter, urination/defecation, fights, drinking/drugging, and now fires. There are plenty of shelters for the homeless in Seattle, and it is a rare night when beds are not available.

I thought the City had a policy of 1) identifying the camps and/or responding to a citizen complaint; 2) giving the people there 3 day “eviction notice” and also offers of assistance getting into some kind of transitional housing, and then 3) clearing out the camp, and storing any articles that the former “residents” might want to reclaim. This seems like a reasonable, humane policy which helps the homeless and keeps the community cleaner/safer….win-win.

What is the current state of this policy? Has it been changed by the McGinn administration? Also, it’s possible this fire was on state-owned property, next to I-5….Does the state (WSDOT) do anything about these camps?
