CHS Pics: A civic-minded Saturday on Capitol Hill

The loss of our momentary sunny spring didn’t keep Capitol Hill from doing the right thing Saturday. Here are images and notes from some of the civic-minded pursuits residents, business owners and other lovers of Capitol Hill undertook to start the weekend.

Looking for something to do with your Sunday? Our latest On the List has a few suggestions.

Powered by bagels from Eltana and stylish orange safety vests from the City of Seattle, volunteers set about picking up trash along 12th Ave just south of Madison on a grey but not too unpleasant Saturday.

No reports of any fantastic finds on this outing but a pile of community clean-up trash bags was accumulated on the steps of the Seattle University Alumni & Admissions building.

Pictures from Saturday’s volunteer activities all around the Hill are below.

The crowd was light but engaged as the City of Seattle and the Capitol Hill Champion group hosted an open house on the Light Rail Sites Urban Design Framework process. (Image: CHS)

According to one City rep, most feedback has been positive with themes of a desire for a stronger LGBT presence in the community elements of the plan and some expressing a desire for an office tower at the location to give Broadway a stronger economic center. (Image: CHS)

Seattle Works volunteers clean up Volunteer Park (Image: @NicolePhelan)

Volunteer Park benefitted from the day’s energy as volunteers participating in the Seattle Works Day helped to remove weeds and invasive plants from the park:

On May 21 Seattle Works Day, organized by the nonprofit Seattle Works (www.seattleworks.org), is facilitating 1,500 volunteers who will be participating in 32 different service projects throughout Seattle from noon to 3:30PM. That’s 5,000 hours of service in a single day!

The projects include Capitol Hill’s very own Volunteer Park, where volunteers will remove invasive plants and spread wood chip mulch. The project will promote the health of trees and shrubs for the enjoyment of parks visitors. Many more projects are still available!

Volunteers participate in a number of ways: through teams sponsored by local companies such as Accenture, Boeing, FedEx and Microsoft ; through team captains who gather their friends and colleagues; or as individuals who join a public team. Team sizes range anywhere from 5 to 300+ members. The volunteers converge at Settle Center immediately following the projects for an after party hosted by Seattle Works.

A little east of the Volunteer Park work party another crew was tackling a project to help restore a 23rd Ave E home for neighbor Jimmie, a homeowner who applied to be part of the Rebuilding Together free home repair program:

Today, 20 volunteers from Sponsor Group, North Coast Electric, are restoring the home of a homeowner in need.  Jimmie is an elderly homeowner who applied to Rebuilding Together Seattle’s free home repair program this year.  Today, volunteers are painting her kitchen and bathroom, providing her with new kitchen cabinets, replacing light fixtures, doing yard work, and providing a new security door!

Good deeds all around to start the weekend — and plenty of time left to make your mark.
