The mysterious alarm-like buzzer that was going off at all hours of the night and day near the television and radio tower facility at 18th and Madison has, thankfully for those living in the area, gone away. We heard back from representatives from two local stations with equipment at the facility — KCTS and KCPQ — both said they were looking into the situation and that sound was not coming from their antennas. As for another possible culprit, the Hearing, Speech and Deafness Center located nearby, we have a message out to them to find out if they can tell us more.

at approx 6:45 am today august 8th, a transformer atop a power pole exploded at the corner by the radio towers. i actually saw the expolsion and the shower of sparks. a few seconds later, black smoke belched from two (supposed) exhaust pipes and all was quiet, there was a no fire or smoke. an employee in the building stuck his head outside and i told him about the explosion. perhaps they’re related?
further to the comment about the transformer explosion – at the same time this morning we lost power on capitol hill (near broadway and e olive way) just long enough for all of our computers to reboot and our alarms not to wake us up. i looked at real time 911 to find an explanation and there was a call to 18th and e pine (were the towers are located) for an “investigate out of service”. not sure if the transformer explosion/power outage was caused by the towers or vice versa but I’m sure they’re related.
I noticed the power went out for a bit about that time.
It woke me up! There was a big BOOM (I thought something had exploded down on 19th at the construction site of the old cow building), the power went off and then came back on.
“Well why didn’t you tell us it was the transformer is about to explode alarm?! You said it was a buzzer, which is not the same thing.”
