A new character has popped up on Broadway’s big red wall and the little owl’s doing its job — drawing attention.
Sound Transit’s night owl was created by ST designer Elizabeth Trunkey to help promote awareness of the start of nighttime work at the Broadway station construction site.
Starting August 1, Sound Transit’s contractor will be adding a second work shift, which could result in increased construction activity and truck traffic. The work shift hours are: 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.

With the start of second shift work on Broadway, we haven’t heard any reports of issues but let us know what you’ve experienced. Tunnel boring is underway with progress being measured in only hundreds of feet at this point. We’ve heard from only a few people that have claimed to feel vibrations or hear noise associated with the tunneling but our attempts to follow up with the people reporting these experiences haven’t been successful.
Meanwhile, another component of the red wall that we reported on last week has an update. The group working on the project has agreed to Sound Transit’s request to edit an image from the wall’s HIV30 banner.
Great job to Elizabeth Trunkey. That owl caught my eye when I was down on Broadway and it was clear what it meant without even reading. Such a great way for information!
I looked and looked at it and couldn’t figure out what it was supposed to be. I thought it was some kind of ghost walrus. The owl’s body is too small.
I’m in bed, it’s 1:05 a.m. and I can hear the construction underway. I don’t give a shit about the owl. It’s the noise! Any word on how long this second shift nonsense is going to continue?
12-18 months. ST has free ear plugs for you. All you want.

In the future, if you do experience unacceptable levels of noise in the evening/overnight hours, please call Sound Transit’s construction hotline at 888-298-2395. The call will be handled immediately (yes, a live person does answer), and will be logged and documented for the appropriate follow-up.
