CHS Pics | Mayor signs new paid sick leave rules into law on 12th Ave

12th Ave’s Plum Bistro was the setting for Seattle labor history on Friday afternoon as Mayor Mike McGinn signed the city’s paid sick leave ordinance into law at Makini Howell’s vegan restaurant in front of an enthusiastic crowd including bill sponsor Nick Licata and many of the social and labor groups that backed the bill. Howell, a member of the Main Street Alliance, praised the new city law, one of only three currently enacted in the nation, and said it would allow her to treat her employees how she would like to be treated. The new law, which will provide paid sick time to employees at Seattle businesses with five or more employees, goes into effect in fall 2012.
