Emergency crews rushed to the construction site on E Pine between Belmont and Boylston Summit early Sunday morning after a man fell 40 feet down an elevator shaft inside the under-construction 6-story apartment building.
In the 1:33a incident, the man in his early 30s suffered multiple fractures including his leg and ribs and was transported to Harborview. We do not have an update on his condition.
It is also not known what the man was doing inside the work site at that time of night. The work site is fenced off as crews construct a 6-story mixed-use building. It is expected to be completed in mid-2012.
I believe you mean between Belmont and Summit. Though I would like that ugly parking garage on Boylston to be history, I feel that it will be there for many years to come.
Corrections are fine and helpful. No nit-picking about it. Fixed.
I was talking with the construction superintendent a couple of months ago and he said they have had someone cut the fence on the Belmont side trying to steal tools and such. I’m guessing it was either a thief, inebriated clubber, or homeless. I also suspect the person wasn’t alone since he received aid before 7am Monday.
A friend and I were walking up the hill along Pine when we heard an eerie wailing from inside the dark building. We paused a moment to listen, and a few people walked by cracking jokes about axe murders and such, but the faint cries had a ring of desperation. So we walked around the side, hopped the fence and followed the sound through the dark until it was apparent there was a person down the shaft. He was obviously very drunk but had been down there alone for hours before anyone either heard him or came to check. We called the police and I talked him through it till they came. I got a call from the officers at 340 am to let me know the outcome, which was nice.
So, it was an inebriated clubber. I’m glad you found him and hope he recovers. We heard some sort of yelling around that time on the Summit side, but thought it was just a loud group at KiKi or R-Place echoing off the buildings.
You both should be considered hero’s. Everyone so often forgets how easy it is to get consumed by themselves. Im glad we have people like you and your Gaga friend walking around the Hill. I would hope he one day too will pay it forward. You are Angels! THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
Heroes. HEROES, HEROES, HEROES! Not “hero’s”.
Goddamn, did an entire fucking generation sleep through 5th grade English?

The man you saved is my brother-in-law. We still aren’t completely sure what he was doing there or how he fell, but he IS alive! He is in stable condition at this time, and has undergone 3 major surgeries so far. He broke just about everything on the right side of his body, shattered his pelvis, and collapsed a lung. it will be a LONG recovery, but our hopes are high =) I just want to say THANK YOU for having the compassion, courage, and heart to help a stranger and SAVE HIS LIFE! For the record, he is NOT a “clubber”, he is a father, husband, brother, son, and friend. He has a family, a career, and happened to be celebrating with a few friends before being sent out-of-state for 2 months for work. We may never know exactly why he was there as he should NOT have been, but the important thing is he is OK and you two ARE HEROES!
Thank you is hardly enough to express the amount of appreciation we have for those of you who stopped that night. If it weren’t for your consideration and compassion for another person we could have lost him. We are so grateful. When I told him that a man and a Lady Gaga look a like found him he had a huge smile on his face. A smile that had it not been for you, I may have never had a chance to see again. For the rest of my life everytime I see his smile I will think of those of you that saved his life.
He wanted me to tell you in his own words “Thank you so much for stopping, if it weren’t for you I might not be here today. You are truely my heroes and I cannot thank you enough”.. Again, on behalf of our entire family from the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU!!!
It was actually neither… It is terrible that people do that sort of thing but I assure you that neither of them are the case.
Issac, we can not thank you enough. We are so grateful for you and your friend for saving a life. If it weren’t for you our lives would never be the same. Since I got the phone call Sunday morning when he arrived at the hospital I have been thanking God that there are angels like you out there. You are truely our hero and I will never be able to thank you enough! THANK YOU!!!
“Goddamn, did an entire fucking generation sleep through 5th grade English?”
I blame home schooling.
