Grey geyser bursts forth on E Pike -- UPDATE: Light rail tunneling sends surprise to surface

(Image: CHS)

Passersby were surprised by a spouting geyser of grey, foamy water shooting from the street at the intersection of E Pike and Boylston just after noon Thursday.

Witnesses tell CHS that the water suddenly shot high into the air, sending a manhole cover tumbling and covering a few cars parked within range of the plume with icky grey mud.

Seattle Fire quickly arrived but the water continued to pour as they worked to shut off the flow. In the meantime, the grey sludge-y water flowed down the nearest storm drain -- and gathered a large lunchtime crowd of onlookers.

Seattle Fire had no immediate information on what specifically had broken and what caused the incident to occur.

Last week, CHS reported on another peculiar moment of a Capitol Hill infrastructure breakdown when a Metro pole on 15th Ave E used to support the wires that power the city's electric trolleys snapped in two and closed the street for hours.

Watermain Break
From the location in the street, it appears to be a watermain that broke. The dirty color and foam is not necessarily sewage, but rather turbidity when the water mixes with soil. Fun!

A-ha!
I wondered if it might be Brenda the Boring machine. That intersection is right on the route to the downtown stop. The September update said Brenda had traveled 1275 feet by 9/27, but didn't give a location.

RE: A-ha!
it appears to be related.

all I know is if it's grout, get it the hell of those cars QUICK! The stuff is essentially concrete and will destroy the paint if it's left there any length of time.

Someone was in that manhole cover earlier this week
I saw someone in the typical street crew/sounders yellow/green jacket messing with I believe that exact manhole cover earlier this week, maybe even yesterday. Makes me wonder what they were up to so close to an incident like this. It could be sabotage!
