E Madison’s itty bitty Baguette shuts down, talks comeback — UPDATE: Terra Plata opens

All we know for sure is that Thursday is the last day to enjoy walk-up banh mi at E Madison’s teensy tiny Baguette:

All-you-can-eat foodie news service Eater Seattle calls the hiatus a “shutter.” But Baguette owner Vanny Him isn’t the closing the doors on a comeback. Here is a note sent by Him to CHS outlining the decision to close and, she tells us, hopefully re-start in a new location with a sit-down format:

I am not really sure what kind of stuff is going around but the fact of the matter is our family is very overextended as it is and unfortunately, Baguette is the thing that constantly suffers.  Over the past year, we have had a number of both expected and unexpected life changing events that has taken us away from participating more in Baguette. We wanted a family business and currently, we don’t have the capacity to run it that way. The only thing we know about our next venture is that Mom wants seating (which obviously the accountant in me highly disagrees with). I am already working day and night as it is with my business so before we can take that next step, we just need a break.

Unfortunately, I know that this response will not be well received by some customers, readers and ???? but even before opening the shop –  we did it with the understanding that this was always about our family.   We can build a new shop but we cannot build new family members. We hope that our customers know that this decision was made with much consideration (esp for our regulars) and that they will understand and support our decision.  The incredible support from the CapHilll community has been overwhelming – we have loved it here!

I would like to thank you as well for your support and for the re-posts. Mom gets a kick out of it every time she sees Baguette in the blog and insists that I interpret the articles for her.

Baguette opened on Madison in mid-2010 — and was immediately confused with the existing Baguette Box mini-chain. CHS gave the small walk-up in a former coffee bar plenty of outsized love — veggie banh mi will do that. In return, Baguette gave us a shirt and several excellent sandwiches (yes, we pay for our food) over their year+ of business. Good luck, Baguette. And, hi, Mom.
