‘Legendary’ First Hill penthouse hits market — $6.7 million

(Images: Windermere)

A few weeks back, we wrote about what might be the most expensive Capitol Hill real estate listing — ever. That $11.2 million Harvard Ave mansion is still available, by the way. This weekend, we bring you news of another amazing — and crazy expensive — property.

Unit 32, the penthouse of Spring St’s exclusive First Hill Plaza condo building, has hit the market. The price tag for the four bedroom, 5 1/2 bathroom unit with sweeping views of the city and beyond? $6.7 million.

The Legendary Penthouse at First Hill Plaza. Hosting almost 7,000 square feet of living space with 360 degree views, unlike any other offering: stadiums, Puget Sound, downtown Seattle, the Olympics, the Space Needle, Lake Union, downtown Bellevue, the Cascades, Lake Washington, & Mount Rainier. Gracious top floor living w/ four bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms. Rooftop pool, 24 hour concierge. Legendary style. An iconic penthouse. An extraordinary offering that comes along once in a lifetime.

Unit 32 was the home of philanthropist Althea Stroum. Stroum died this spring at 88.

The Stroums were well known for their philanthropy — spreading generosity across education, the arts, health care and beyond, and encouraging others to do the same.

Even people who don’t know about their giving may recognize their names in and on buildings and programs in the region, from the Grand Lobby of Benaroya Hall to Jewish community centers.

Gifts from Mrs. Stroum and her late husband’s foundations have benefited some 300 organizations.

“They were remarkable philanthropic leaders in the community at a time [in the 1970s and 1980s] when there were not that many in the Jewish community or the community as a whole,” said Richard Fruchter, president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle. “They were mentors to many of the next generation of philanthropists in this area.”

According to county records, the Stroums have been the only owners of the 6,900 square-foot unit since the First Hill Plaza was built in 1982. If you decide to move in, your neighbors will include a few high-powered Seattle attorneys and a Benaroya. And, good news! You’ll also own six parking spaces!

But if $6.7 million is a little out of your price range, you might want to consider another Plaza unit on the market. #29i is also listed right now. The two-bedroom 29i will only set you back $1.4 million and change.

People often wonder who lives in places like this. It is interesting to put a name/face and reason behind the sale of a property.

Years ago I did physical therapy at a gym/therapists near the top of the Nordstrom Tower across Madison form 1st Hill Plaza.

Regular gym users were reportedly quit intrigued by the First Hill Plaza resident who did her ironing topless by the window facing them……..

And only $6.7 million.

“Gracious top floor living w/ four bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms.”

With all of Unit 32’s “legendary” opulence and splendor, why did they scrimp on that last half bathroom? If they would make it an even six bathrooms I’d buy it.

Would they take a third party check in payment?

The Stroums truly were wonderful people. Sad to know they’ve both passed.

Laying down in your $6.7M penthouse, dreaming of a fire or earthquake and trying to get out? I’d spend that kind of money elsewhere!

Is there a listing for this property?

Curiously, Redfin doesn’t mention what the home owners dues for the penthouse will be … I shudder to think.

They do list it:

Homeowners Association Information
Dues: $6,050

That on top of the $30,402 in annual taxes. Yikes!

Thanks for the pics! That decorating scheme is 80’s haute locked in amber.

I guess neither of the daughters wanted to hang onto the condo; maybe they figure they already pay enough property tax. Daughter Cynthia (who flamed out as Obama’s ambassador to Luxembourg) paid $52,000 in property tax on her Denny Blaine waterfront house this year, but that’s nothing. Daughter Marsha paid $156,000 in property taxes last year on the Mercer Island waterfront compound she’s plopped on the market for $27 million.
